Noah, The Bait Dog

In dogfighting, baiting is the act of pitting a potential fighting dog against a defenseless animal, often another dog—a bait dog. Bait dogs are used to test a "game" dog’s fighting instinct... and to further train them to fight in the ring.

To render bait dogs helpless, their teeth and nails are often filed or removed, and their mouths are duct taped shut. Then, they are restrained to further impair them... as a fighter dog is instructed to attack. During the baiting process, bait dogs are horrendously mauled and killed. Those who survive each attack receive no treatment for their wounds, which can include loss of their ears, eyes, snouts, and limbs. Many survivors are subjected to the same baiting torture, every single day, for as long as they live. Others are dumped to suffer slow, painful deaths.

Often, bait dogs are obtained from “Free to a good home” ads, animal shelters, and Craigslist. Others may be stolen from your backyard. In addition, many of the “weak” or submissive Pit Bulls— those with the sweetest dispositions—are deemed worthless by dogfighters… and turned into bait dogs. Then, the nightmare begins…

For these dogs, their gentle nature is used against them; their friendly demeanor is exploited; their loving spirits are purposely broken. Their smiles are duct taped shut; their joy is snuffed out; and their desire for affection is denied. Their hopes, dreams, and love are stolen… and replaced with terror, pain, and heartbreak. Their innocence is stripped away, layer by layer, until they have nothing left...
The lucky ones die in the ring. The others can only pray for such mercy

Ultimately, the purity in their hearts... will be their greatest downfall… the very cause of their suffering and torturous deaths. Sadly, their unwillingness to fight... won't save them from the fighting. It will only ensure... that they are always the losers. Always.

In order to survive this level of torture, these dogs must retreat to a place deep inside themselves… and hide. In turn, they completely shut down… because the physical pain has wounded their hearts… and the emotional pain has wounded their souls.

Bait dogs are dead… long before they die…

But…
If you save them…
They can come back to life…

Noah’s Story
Noah has been a bait dog almost all of his life. Last week, in Macon, Georgia, witnesses saw a group of thugs dump a lifeless little dog in the street... and speed away. That dog (who I later named Noah) was completely emaciated, with severe, painful wounds covering his entire body... which led to massive, widespread infections. His eyes were swollen shut, and his head was swollen to more than twice its normal size.

Onlookers were horrified at this scene... assuming that this poor dog must be dead. There’s just no way that a dog in this condition could still be alive...

But then… this gentle, broken boy... slowly lifted his swollen head off the pavement, to show that he was still among the living.
A tiny, heartbreaking whimper said, “Please help me.”

Noah was picked up by Animal Control and taken to the local pound. When he arrived, he was utterly terrified… a feeling he knows all too well. As they led him into the shelter, my amazing rescue friend, Myshea of ARC HS, saw him… battered, wounded, and broken. As he passed by, she reached for him, and despite his fear and pain, he gently licked her hand.

Myshea began to sob, because she knew his fate all too well: Ater surviving a lifetime of abuse... this little boy had arrived at the one place... where he'd have no chance of survival: the pound. Dogs like Noah are not placed up for adoption at the pound. They are killed. Immediately.

Regardless, Myshea began treating his wounds... and showing him love for the first time in his life. In that moment, she made a promise to herself that she'd find help for this baby… and she made a promise to him that he wouldn’t die there. So, the pound gave her until the next morning to find rescue for him, or he would be killed.

Myshea called me in tears, and told me his story. Then, she said: "Ash, I know you already do so much... but this dog needs you. He’s so gentle; he’s so loving; he’s so forgiving. He deserves to live... and he shouldn’t die there. We can’t let him die there!”
That’s when I said: “He won’t die there. Call the pound tomorrow morning and tell them not to euthanize. I’ll take him.”

The next morning, Myshea made the call that would save Noah’s life. Then, ARC HS pulled this sweet boy from the pound, on behalf of Lucky Dog Rescue. Next, two amazing volunteers, Lucia and Carla, transported him to Meridian, Mississippi.

When he arrived... he walked right into my arms… and fell into my heart...

I named him: Noah.

That night, I watched… as Noah laid down, closed his eyes... and breathed a huge sigh of relief. Then… he drifted off to sleep.

I can only imagine it's the first time he’d ever felt safe ...in his whole life.

When he woke... he looked around the room… with uncertainty of his new reality.

As his eyes found me, a huge smile spread across his face. At that moment... I saw the years of terror, pain, and heartbreak... leaving his little body.

Knowing in his soul... that the nightmare was finally over.
But the dream… has just begun…

Noah is currently being treated for his wounds, infections, and heartworms. He will also be neutered, dewormed, and fully vaccinated.

When Noah is feeling better, he will be placed up for adoption through Lucky Dog Rescue. If you are interested in adopting Noah, please fill out the online Adoption Application: http://www.petpardons.com/adoption/

  1. Everybody needs to read this story so they can understand the horrific reality that takes place daily in America for thousands of dogs just like Noah. Thank you to everyone who helped save him, and thanks to you for, as ever, having a heart the size of Mississippi.

  8. everyone needs to read this story , share it , read it to your older kids and then have them learn its not legal and its not socially accepted. also teach them when they hear there friends talk about this kind of behavior to feel safe enough to come tell there parent , so the parent can contact the authorities. if we all banned together as a whole .......what a loud voice that would be .i long for the day when shelters , rescues are no longer needed, when euthanasia is used for a termilly ill best friend that has let you know its time, when someone uses the word bait its because there going fishing.when people smarten up as to spaying and neutering there pets.when anytime someone uses a breathing , living , feeling animal for the almighty dollar it makes my blood boil.so teach your children , write your politiciaNS and hopefully someone in power will listen and the slap on the wrist laws will go away, and jail time and fines will be put into place. think about it to most of us our animals are our child or children , so why shouldnt the laws be the same as our human children??????? and there should be an animal abuse registry the same as a sex offenders registry.

  12. the people that do this to dogs need to be locked away forever. Pit bulls are such good dogs and have such bad names because of the scum that fight them.

On a happier note Thank you! Thank you for saving him, for giving him a chance at a dogs life, loved and unafraid. I wish I had something to give other then my undying gratitude for what all the rescue groups do. You are shining stars in a dark depraved world.

  20. And fantastic piece that like all others brought a tear. Ihave 3 of the most loving, docile pit bulls, one of which is a former bait dog, and the thought of any of them falling victim to this makes me lose it. Knowing how beautiful and loving the pit bull personality is, NONE of them should have to endure this treatment - thank you for sharing and offering the real details of the bait dog.

  22. people that do this really make me mad! These poor dogs should never be subjected to this kind of so called life. If I was a different person Id like to tie them up and use them as bait people! And I use that word people loosely! Im so glad for the people that find it in their hearts to help these poor babies. I wish I could adopt a few of them, but my dog, a red nose pitt doesnt like other dogs and if I left him he probobly would have been used the same way! He has such a loving disposition towords people. There need to be tougher laws for idiots like this! God bless all of you, all I can do is advocate right now but I know someday Ill be able to do more. I pray every night about all these poor angels that want nothing but love. Keep up the good work!

I READ THE STORIES AND I CAN ALMOST FEEL THE FEAR, ANGUISH,TERROR AND PAIN THAT THESE BEAUTIFUL ANGELIC CREATURES ARE PUT THROUGH AND I CRY FOR HOURS. ALL I WANT TO DO IS TAKE THEM ALL AWAY FROM THIS TERRIBLE WORLD AND BUILD THEM A HEAVEN.

  35. If someone who is involved with this act fully reads this, I believe we all ask you to please stop this. It's not right and you can do other things for money other than putting loving animals to fight against one another. It your so tough then fight yourselves not creatures who cannot defend themselves.

  37. Animal rescuers across the country see these stories weekly, give their hearts and money to these dogs, and hold back all the built up anger they feel towards abusers so that they can instead do just this: keep those "Noahs" out of harm's way. The very best thing for all of us who are involved in rescue to do is to continue to educate, to continue to disseminate information, and to continue to fight for the basic humane care rights of companion animals. We are all passionate with each other to talk to; it is the uneducated who most need to see the utter power of healing we see in this post. It is those who will most benefit from this lesson, and it is those who will hopefully cutter disseminate the kind work of the rescuer. Reach out friends! Be a vocal advocate in your community and inspire even the most difficult and apathetic amongst us to greater good!

  40. I remember the day I got Dexter My American Pit Bull my son came home with this tiny dog he was 3 weeks old and full of fleas and I asked my son what he was going to do with the puppy and he looked at me and said well mom I am going to keep him and then when he is old enough I am going to fight him well at the time my son was 17 years old well I took the puppy away from him and gave the puppy a bath and bottle fed the puppy and my son never got close to the puppy because I told him flat out that Dexter was mine and he did not own the dog. I put a Stop to that Idea real quick. Dexter is now 12 years old and the love of my life he is a mommies boy and I will do whatever I have to do to Protect animals. Dog Fighting Is Wrong And Anyone Who Fights Dogs Should Go To Jail For A Very Long Time :)

  41. We have to hope that the people that did this to Noah and probably countless other dogs, have a special place in hell reserved for them. It's the only justifiable end to this other than the obvious happy, loving life Noah shall have and truly deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  42. There is a special place in heaven for people like all of you who helped Noah. I have shared and recommended that people read this story. Its a truth that needs told no matter how hard it is to tell or to hear.

  49. Noah now will be surrounded with the love he has always deserved...And he will give the love back ten-fold which only an animal can do after enduring such torture...If only the license plate of the car these disgusting people who dumped Noah could have been obtained...These cowards would have all told on each other and hopefully been prevented from ever inflicting this kind of treatment on another innocent animal.

  54. What a sweet story, but I do not understand why if he is safe now, and has found a loving home, he would be adopted? Is there not a huge risk that he could fall into the wrong hands? Why change his environment again?

  55. It's hard to believe people are capable if this level of cruelty, but they are. What you do for these animals proves there is also good in the world too tho. People who care, even when it may seem hopeless. I greatly admire the work you do, you are truly an inspiration!

  59. It takes a really tough person to torment & dump a dog. Not! it takes a coward.

I do agree that we should (I do) talk to our older children about this. My son knows all about dog fighting. We have a small rescue dog (terrier mix) and she proudly wears her 'Prize- not-Fighter' shirt in tribute to her bigger sisters in rescue. This is a sad, horrible business. And you are an absolute saint on earth, thank you!!!!

  60. What a great story. It's so kind of you to take this pup in.

  61. Sad but true, most do not want to aknowledge this kind of behavior exists. It takes (a third skin so to speak) to aknowledge this and perhaps feel their pain, even just a little. Compassion is the key

I hope all the "noah's" are found and rescued and finally loved.

  72. I really dislike human beings. Especially the thugs who use, abuse and harm animals for money because they are too lazy to get an education and get a real job. Easy money is what this world is about anymore. Thank goodness there are people out there who care. If more people didn't turn a blind eye to what was going on the judgements for these lowlifes would be much more severe. As it should be.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I wish I could adopt all abused animals and give them a loving home. I feel bad for those who treat animals like this. Judgment Day may suck for them. Peace & Love.

  75. I will pray that everyone who has ever had anything to do with the rescue of an animal such as this one be kept in God's highest places. I will not wish anything upon those who hurt these poor animals because my imagination can't reach the horror God has in store for them.

  76. Again I cried this morning for Noah and the countless others that have been, beaten, neglected and tortured! It hurts my heart to know people( if you can call them that) have total disregaurd for life. Im so glad they have you and everyone else that helps them. We need WAY tougher laws for animal abuse. I rescued my pitt from a backyard breeder 4 yrs ago and he is the most wonderful, loving dog and also my constant companion. I heard the guy was gonna use sell them for fighting puposes and convinced him to let me have one, his names Capone, and then after I got him home at 5 weeks called and turned him in! Nothing ever happened because there was no proof! At least I was able to save my sweet baby. I cant understand how people can do this and listen to them cry and not feel anything. Im so glad for people like you Ashley! God Bless You!

  78. It is horrible that any creature of this earth should ever suffer the way Noah obviously did and in my eyes Ashley, Myshea, Lucia and Carla are true heros. Dogs hold a special place in the heart of Americans which is why when we hear about the abuses we can't help but cry. Thank goodness in Noah's case it was tears of joy.

  79. Awwww the poor baby, people really SUCK when they abuse, luckily there are people like Ashley, Myshea, Lucia and Carla.....I know there are alot of others too that are good and try the best they can, its just craziness, why do they do it?? I hope that Noah finds the most loving family, make sure you check the people out first, you never know these days :(

  80. You gals who saved this dog are truly angels. Anyone who terrorizes a dog this way deserves what Bin Laden got. Shot down and dumped somewhere. Because its obvious they have no soul and won't stop until someone stops them.

    ReplyDelete
  81. What a horrible thing. I am so glad he was rescued and has now found a better life. Someone needs to throw these awful people in the ring as "bait" -- tie their arms and legs and duct tape their mouth. See how they like it.......Can't believe there are such awful human beings in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  82. What id like to know is what happend to the 2 thugs that dumped him on the street? Someone shoul let them see just how it feels to be treated that way. If they had to live a life of pain and starvation they would change there ways but one thing for sure what they do they will deff anwser for in time. Sure am glade that the poor little thing got a second chance.

  83. I just read this story about Noah. As I read the story my eyes filled with tears and my hert broke for what this poor boy has been thru. Thanks to you and his friend at the shelter now he can begin to heal and find the love and family he so deserves. I pray one day that we can put a stop to animal fighting and abuse and let the dogs live in peace. Thank you for saving this boy he has the greatest smile. xoxoxoxo to u Noah. May u have peach and love for the rest of your days.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'd never really read exactly what they do to these 'bait dogs' before. I mean, about the teeth being pulled or filed, i'd read about duct taping their mouth. Oh, it just all makes me so sick. I will never understand the mentality of cruelty to an animal or a human for that matter (altho i'd inflict something on anyone who hurt an animal if i thought i could get away with it. I can't imagine how Noah felt, & it is surprising, but understandable, with a dog's intelligence, that he knew he was safe with you. It is too bad you can't keep him. I hope he doesn't panic cuz he has to leave you, prob the first person to show him true love. But i'm sure you will check whoever tries for him so he don't fall into the wrong hands. Thanks for being an animal lover & defender of wrong.

My CoCo was also a bait dog (but she's a Shih-Poo)and her wounds were horrific too! I was appalled by Noah's beginnings as a bait dog as well...but I am sooooo relieved with his outcome of becoming a "LUCKY" dog! Ashley you truly are an angel on earth for all the lonely, lost, broken, and suffering puppies! Love you Noah...and continued prayers for a full recovery and FUR-ever home! XoXoXo!

  88. I never knew there was a such thing as "bait dogs". It is down right cruel. It saddens me to think that people do this and dont even blink an eye. I just dont understand why someone would do this...very sad. Im happy to know Noah was rescued and hope many more are. Shame on those who commit such a crime as animal cruelty.

  89. I don't know you, but thank you for reassuring me that there are good people who care. This story breaks my heart, but I am glad that Noah is happy and got the life that every dog deserves.

  91. this may sound harsh but this is just how i feel, i believe people that can hurt and kill helpless animals should be put to death. because honestly, if its so easy for them to do to animals, they will one day upgrade to people.

  92. It's stories like these that bring me directly to tears. I hate it when people do this to such cute, beautiful, and loving creatures. Noah is just such a beautiful dog and I wish I could have him, but, it wouldn't be fair to him due to my zero income and my four cats who are TERRIFIED of dogs. But, if I could have ANY wish in this world come true, it would be that he finds the home that God intended for him. And I hope that I get a dog like him someday.

  93. Don't think this is just reserved to poor neighborhoods, big money involved in this.
Caring people need to realize that we must make our police departments get more involved and other crimes will go down too.

  96. I read this and I'm at a loss for words, FOR EVIL OF THIS MAGNETUDE, THERE CAN BE NO FORGIVENESS.
there is nothing that i can possibly write that will satisfy my anger.
How can a dog who have been broken, messed up been through hell
have the courage to continue with life ammong humans is... is....is...
I give up, there are no words. I hope Noah will find a happy home, not to soon I hope,
he deserves to stay in HEAVEN with the angels ( Myshea and Ashley!!!!) a little longer.

  97. These people are sick.I wonder how they would feel if the same thing happened to them? If you don't want to treat an animal the way you would want to be treated then don't get one. The poor things deserve a loving family and deserve to be treated with love and respect.Every time I read something like this I hug my animals thankful that I have them and not some idiot that would hurt them.

  98. people that do this horrible thing " dog fighting " SHOULD BE PUT IN AS BAIT AND TNEN TORN APART AND SEE IF THEY LIKE HOW IT FEELS .... truly non human and disgusting !!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  99. PLEASE DONT THE SAME THING HAPPEN, someone comes to pick up and says they will take and love then do the same thing and put him in a dog pen for fighting or as bait !!!!!!! this is how these jackasses get them in the first place !!!!!!!!

  100. It is so heartbreaking that there are "people" out there who take great pleasure being a part of dog fighting. They have no empathy or compassion whatsoever for these dogs. If you put an ad in the paper that a puppy or dog is "free to good home" the chances are this dog is going to be a bait dog, and you are sentencing this dog to a terrible and painful death - if they are lucky. If not, these torture could continue indefinitely. Please share this information and report any suspected dog fighting to the authorities. You are their only voice.

  104. God Bless you for coming to this sweet dogs rescue. I too have rescued 3 PB's. They are a very sweet breed that all too often get a bad rap. My goal one day is to open and operate a PB rescue God willing. Thank you for all that you do! 110. The sweetness in that animal's face after all he has been through is just unbelievable. The gal that took pity and saved him has a special place both here and in heaven. And the one that put him through hell and then tossed him and all others that do the same thing, also have a special place; karma is a bitch.

If you teach your children about the various requirements for iguana care, then they may find it quite fascinating to help you in your task.
They're also far too small even for a juvenile iguana.

  125. No animal deserves to suffer that kind of abuse.. Those who torture animals need to be brought to justice and locked away. People who think its right to make any animal fight are THE SCUM OF THE EARTH. Its the abusers that should be irradicated of this planet!!. Better still put them all in a sealed room and let them kill each other. That way the tax payer wont have to pay for them to be locked up in jail.

  127. My dear friends, I have a solution:
A group of like minded humans capture the creatures (whom are doing these bad things to animals, sorry but I am not in the same species group as these so-called humans); use them as bait in under-ground human fighting rings, if they survive the fight('s), we then drop them in CURRENT war zones, in which they are not OUR problem any more and the other side will surely abuse them father; it would also cut the cost's of taking these bad creatures to court, in which taxpayers fit the bill's. It would be a great revenge for all bait animals small and large :)

  129. Hate to break it to ya, but that's not a "bait dog"... Those are wounds from fighting. I understand the stigma attached to pitbulls is awful and people are trying to portray them as victims, but the bait dog stuff is just bull shit and making you look stupid. Learn about game dogs and you'll understand that bait dogs aren't real, uneeded and made up.
