Why I Love Pit Bulls

My foster baby, Bonnie
Why do I love Pit Bulls?

Maybe it’s that big, beautiful head, just begging to be rubbed. Maybe it’s those soulful eyes, leading me straight into a wounded heart. Maybe it’s that childlike spirit… full of innocence and hope… despite the harsh realities of the world. Maybe it’s that joyful smile, saying to the critics: “I know you think I’m mean. I know you don’t trust me. But even though you hate me… I still love you.”

Maybe it’s the loyalty… the unwavering devotion in the face of cruelty, neglect, and abuse. Maybe it’s the fact that this very loyalty… this precious gift of allegiance… is exploited every day, by evil humans with sadistic motivations.

Maybe it’s the undying will to please their master, the drive for praise at any cost, or the endless desire for compassion of any kind. Maybe that’s what makes them so special…

Maybe it’s the love… the love that waits… often for an entire lifetime… to be given. The love that dies… in the dogfighting ring… on the end of a chain… or at the pound. The love wasted, the lives forsaken, the beauty forgotten… Maybe that’s what I see in them…

Maybe it’s because the media has inaccurately and wrongfully demonized one of the most loving, loyal, and incredible "breeds" on Earth—the Pit Bull. Maybe it’s because the public believes these mistruths, and joins in the bashing. Maybe it’s because Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) has enacted laws that ban these amazing creatures… laws that seek to destroy every last living, breathing Pit Bull in America. Maybe it’s because, for the lucky few Pit Bulls in loving homes, BSL rips them away from their families and sentences them to death. Maybe it’s because these precious souls can’t understand why this is happening to them… as they cry out for their families, just before they are killed…
Maybe that’s why I fight for them…

My foster baby, Wonder
Maybe it’s because Pit Bulls are the most abused breed in existence… and the most highly euthanized breed in shelters. Maybe it’s because, in many American shelters, strict policies prohibit the adoption of bully breeds, eliminating all hope for these dogs. Maybe it’s because, even when given the chance for a family, no one wants to adopt them. Maybe it’s the heartbreak of knowing, that after a lifetime of suffering… and then being dumped at the pound, their only way out… their only chance for mercy… is death.
Maybe that’s why I care so much…

Maybe it’s because, even in no-kill shelters, Pit Bulls often spend their entire lives waiting for someone to take them home. Maybe it’s because, for so many, that adoption day will never come. Maybe it’s because, while waiting on that unlikely chance for a family, many of these dogs will slowly lose their minds living in a tiny shelter kennel. Maybe it’s because, due to the stress of shelter confinement and the lack of socialization, their already small chances of adoption are soon reduced to no chance at all of ever getting out. Maybe it’s because, for bully breeds, the never-ending dream of having a family of their own… is only a dream…

My foster baby, Pepsi

After weeks, months, and years of waiting in a shelter for a family who will never come for them, all hope turns to despair… all desire turns to depression… all joy turns to anguish. Across the country, millions of these beautiful, amazing dogs are simply living each day… waiting to die.

So why do I rescue Pit Bulls? Maybe my drive to save them is because I’ve never known a breed more deserving of life. Maybe my will to help them is because they have no other hope. Maybe my advocacy for the breed stems from my desire to fight injustice… to right the wrongs and stand up for the victims.

My dog, Riley

Maybe it’s the fact that 2 of the most incredible dogs I have ever known are my children, Rudy and Riley, both Pit Bulls. Maybe it’s because many of my amazing rescue babies are Pit Bulls. Maybe it’s because I would do anything for my children, because my children would do anything for me.

Maybe it's because they have no reason to trust me, or anyone for that matter, and yet... they do. Maybe it's because they have no reason to forgive, and yet, they have.

Maybe my love for them is a reflection of their love for me… unconditional, unwavering, and infinite. Maybe I want to change the world for them… to end the unspeakable suffering… to tell them that they matter… and to return the love they so freely and unselfishly give. Maybe it’s because I realize that I possess the power to do all of these things. Maybe it’s because I know that can use my life to fix this for them.

And maybe, just maybe, you will join me…

My foster baby, Molly

    1. OOOOOh. This is the best website ever!!!! Thank you Ashley for helping those beautiful pit bulls. I work to rescue those pits everyday. Since I don't have a work permit yet, I work voluntarily at a farm where a girl rescues dogs, with 18 pitties at the time. I have yet to meet a mean one!

  3. I have a part-pitbull, adopted from a rescue organization. She is the most loving, beautiful souls. In fact, the schnauzer I grew up with was more "vicious" than my precious Aila. She would attempt to nip or bite my younger sister and dad. Aila, loves people, had a thing for eating shoes, and is high energy, but is tender.
Pitbulls are victims of stereo-typing, and profiling as humans are. We don't stand for it as people, why stand for it for our pets?

  4. Very moving, too bad more people dont think like you do. I would own a Pitty in a minute, but my town says no to the bullies.

  5. Riley looks just like my Tempest. Otherwise known as my "Princess Pudding Cup" Don't ask me where that came from, it just did. She is awesome!!! She loves to snuggle and loves all kinds of attention. Her and my Lab mix get along so well!!! He is 5. She is 1 year old. We rescued her from an Animal Shelter. We actually went to get another dog that I fell in love with on the internet that had the brindle coloring that I think is so awesome, but we came home with Tempest, because she just melted our hearts. She has those perky ears and an awesome personality!!! She acted like she was waiting for us to come and was so excited to see us. I wouldn't trade her for the world. I love that head they have also!!! I love my Lab very much, and now I have fallen in love with Pit Bulls!!! Pit Bulls Rock!!!

  6. I love pitts too! Like every dog, they just want to be loved! I owned a Rottie and the same persona that they are dangerous followed my big teddybear of a girl. She was very gentle for such a big dog. I agree the media makes Pitts like other breeds so dangerous when they are not!

  7. Ashley, you do such an amazing job with these dogs. I'm so envious of you cause I wanna do so so much more for animals. I'm working in AZ temporarily and I am pushing my friends to join your organization. Hats off to you, for we are their voice!!! I wish I was in a better situation to help fostering, but I tell you this, as soon as I get in a stable situation, I will contact you to help out!!! Thanks for all you do!!!

  8. That was so well put. You brought tears to my eyes because I do share your love for Pits. I have a soon to be 3 year old lill girl who brightens up my life every day! She is always happy to see me and makes sure I know It. If its not that Adorable stiff waggle its there slapping puppy kisses! It saddens me to think people are still so agenst these beautiful dogs. One day people will realize how loyal and silly these pups are. <3

  13. i love my families pitbulls, i always look at bully breeds for adoption becuase when i can move out of a no dog apartment building i can adopt as many bullies as i can. they are the most loyal breed out there, i have never known a pitbull the be agressive that i have seen or met. i have seen other dog breeds that the dog was just so agressive but none of them were pitbulls. the negative thoughts toward bully breeds needs to be turned against the HUMANS that get and breed them and FORCE them to fight and be mean. we can't punish a breed for the cruelities HUMANS do to them and force them to do.

  15. Pit Bulls Are Marvelous Dogs... It's Such A Saddening Sight To See The Way So Many Treat Them... Every Time I See A Pitt Bull In A Bad Condition I Just Want To Take It Home And Care For It. Some Day People Will Realize That The Only Ones Who Are Truly Aggressive And Evil Are Them, Themselves. I Know A Lot Of People Who Would Rather Leave A Pitt Bull In The Shelter Or Anywhere To Fend For Itself But I Also Know Many More Who Would Do Anything To Help... Some Day Dog Lovers And Animal Lovers In General Will Win This Devastating Battle Between Life And Death For Such Magnificent And Beautiful Creatures... As Much As My Mom Loves Dogs.... I Doubt She Would Let Me Get One Because They're "Aggressive" Dogs... She Doesn't Understand Dogs Like We Do.... Some Day All Animals Will Finally Have A Home And Someone Who Loves Them Just As Much As They Love Anybody...

  17. Thank you Ashley for being such a huge Pitbull advocate. It's true that they are amazing dogs that can't seem to get a fair shake. Back yard breeders and dogfighters keep the shelters full of these tortured, neglected souls. It's so sad that it's easy to give up, but we can't because they need us.

  18. I don't know much about Pit Bulls except for what i have heard. i do believe they are getting a bad wrap. I love all dogs and it breaks my heart that people have ruined the chance for these dogs my their stupidity. All dogs are capable of love if they are given love.

  19. My best friend is a pitbull named Ruby.. To tell you the truth I don't know what my family would do without her... She has changed my whole families perspective on the breed... I get outraged when someone talks about how bad pits are and they hate kids... Needless to say I speak my mind whether they like it or not.. This is my favorite breed and I'll be damned if I'm gonna let them banned from every county and city around the world!! Together hopefully, maybe we can save this breed it would break my heart if someone took my babygirl away from me and my family...

  21. I volunteer at a no kill shelter, and pit bulls are always there the longest. They are also always the favorites of the volunteers and shelter staff, so loving and patient. Before my foray into the shelter world, I had no aversion to a pit bull, just never gave them much thought. Now, I can say that my next rescue will definitely be a pit. I have had many discussions with family and friends, trying to counter their uneducated negative assumptions about these dogs...and these are kind hearted people! I finally won over my husband, after having him spend time with my shelter "boyfriend", a sweet pit boy, Leo. He is now a believer. One of my proudest moments was overhearing my 13 year old daughter, who volunteers at the shelter also, defending and educating a group of her friends and their parents, about pit bulls. She was so righteous in her argument and spot on with her descriptions of these dogs, it was just beautiful. From the mouths of babes... Thank you again, Ashley, for a great post. You always seem to say what I feel.

  22. A year ago we got a pitbull puppy for my 11 year old son. That was the best decision I have ever made. Shelby is the sweetest, most loyal dog. She waits for my son to come home everyday. If he has to run outside for something and doesnt take her with she sits and cries and cries. Before we got her I was the typical person who hated pitties. I swore I would never own one, didnt want anything to do with them. A friend of mine posted pics of the puppies that her 2 had on facebook. I dont know what happened but something about the little puppy faces made me fall in love. When they were old enough we went to pick her up and have never regretted it. Since then I am the one telling everyone that will listen how wonderful this breed is!! I will never own any other kind of dog.

  26. I have always loved the pits. My friend introduced me to this breed over 30 yrs. ago. Her husband had 25 dogs, all fighters, and my heart just cried, I would go and help care for the dogs daily, they adored me as I adored them. I finally purchased my own pit in 1985, Jasmine Rose from a farmer as a pup. She was our pride and joy until one day she was stolen from our yard. I had found out later that month, she was blinded with comet cleanser, and shot between the eyes for she WOULD NOT FIGHT, and thrown into a pre dug pit and buried. I have missed my girl for some 30 plus years now. Ashley, the work you do with these fabulous dogs, God Bless you for this. People do not understand the good about this breed, only the "BAD" they need education and spend time with them to know that they are warm and loving animals and one of Gods most precious babies.

  31. I pray that God blesses the work you do! The time, energy & devotion you give to these animals is incredible. I have a german shepherd/pit bull mix, both stereotyped as aggressive dogs, and from day one he has been the sweetest, most loyal and gentle dog I've ever had. He is great with kids, other dogs, and has never bitten me harder than a child's squeeze even while playing rough with him. Thank you for giving these amazing and misunderstood dogs a voice :)

  34. You are not alone... my husband and I have adopted a pit bull. He is the most amazing baby I have ever owned. He's loving, gentle, playful, and wants nothing more than to please everyone he meets. He loves children as well as adults, other animals including cats, he wants everyone and everything to love him and play with him. I would never hesitate to bring another one of these amazing animals into my home. It breaks my heart every time someone asks me if my baby is mean. I know that they only ask because they don't know any better, but so many pit bulls get a bad rap and it should be the people training those pit bulls that get the rap not the dog! I commend you for your amazing efforts, please keep educating people on these amazing animals!

  35. I have a bully mix who looks very much like your Riley (except he has floppy ears). His name is Simon and he is the most loving, gentle dog we've ever owned. He would rather be sitting at my feet than playing outside with his brother and sister (also a bully mix who looks exactly like your Pepsi). Tara is a sweet soul, very verbal. My son has two pits, one of which is a 100 pound lap dog, a big sweet heart. I sing the praises of pit bulls whenever I can. Thank you for all you do for animals.

  36. You have said exactly what I didn't know how to put into words. Pitties are amazing. They are lucky to have people like you willing to stand behind all their greatness and fight all of the ignorance about them in this world. I wish all could see that they are truly the best breed of dog a person or family could ask for. Continue the good fight.....Diesel (that's my pittie) and I thank you along with so many other people and all pitties!!!! You are just as amazing as the pitties you help.

  38. This piece moved me to tears. My boyfriend's sister has a pit bull mix that was rescued off the streets of LA. Mona is the sweetest dog I've ever known. And it's sad when Lori tells me about how when they go out for walks, people look at her in horror because she has a pit bull at the end of her leash. They have no idea what a sweet and loving dog she is, all they know are the lies and untruths that have been fed to them by the media.

I truly admire you and look up to you for all that you do for these precious souls. Thank you.

I was horrified, as I had no personal experience with the breed. All I could imagine was my beautiful grandson's face being bit off-WRONG!He is an amazing dog and my grandson ,who will be 7 on Saturday, adores him. He is a rescue and they have since gotten another pit rescue. They are great with kids and so loving. Thanks for all you do and for educating the ignorant public, as I was once one of them!

  43. First off I would like to say Thank you. Thank you for all you do. You truly are an Angel sent by God. We need so many more angels like you in this world. We all need to do all we can for these dogs, all dogs and all animals for that matter. I would like to share a little story if I may here.
As we all know society does a great job brainwashing us in so many ways with information that is meant to scare us with plenty of help from the media.
I once held the belief that pit bulls were the ticking time bombs of the dog world. I swore, even though I was a dog lover that I would never, ever have a pit bull. I was ignorant and believed the sensational stories I heard in the news and from people I knew. I had what I thought was knowledge but I didn't have the correct knowledge and that is what everyone who loves these special dogs can do to help their plight - that is to spread the correct knowledge. That was 20 years ago when I used to be one of "them", you know, the "them" that have never considered that maybe their long held beliefs about pit bulls were wrong. Well, that same 20 years ago is when I went to the local city pound (very high kill at the time) looking to adopt a dog-preferably a really small dog. Well, the dog officer had stepped out for a time and left a sign on the door that he would be back in 30 minutes. I figured I'd hang around and wait on him since it wasn't going to be long. While I was waiting a man drove into the dirt parking lot and asked me if I was looking for a dog. I said yes that I was looking for a small dog to adopt. As we spoke I noticed he had on the front seat a dark brown/ black brindle pit bull about a year old or so. The dog was curled up tight, petrified and appeared abused. He was going to surrender her to the dog pound. I started asking questions about the dog as I started to ponder taking her, like if she was potty trained and trained in general. He told me what turned out to be one lie after another. I told myself " this is the one dog I do not want" but I could not let him discard her like planned, I told him to give her to me. He did. I took her home and I named her Chili. In the beginning we had some rough patches because she was damaged goods and had lots of problems. But I didn't give up on her and she didn't give up on me as I learned to unlearn my old thinking. We had 16 great years together and now I have 2 more pit bulls (rescued of course) Need I say more? They are the only dogs for me forever. They make every day a great day.

  47. This is DEF a tear jerker for me. For me because I understand. I get to go to shelters and see these awesome dogs dying on death row simply because they are a pit bull. Its unfair. I do have a small APBT rescue and Texas and have made a huge impact on the breed here. If there were more people like us these amazing dogs would have a better chance of a 2nd chance!

I want to open a pit bull rescue/no kill shelter in the county I live in, but it is a slow and costly process. 56. That was one of the most well put slap in the face of all of those that would demonize and bash on such a wonderful breed. I applaud you and agree whole heartedly. It brakes my heart to see how many of these wonderful animals are abused, neglected, and destroyed. More golden retrievers one of the most desired family dogs bite people every year but you do not see them being thrown to the slaughter like the pit is. A lot comes from the ones that would abuse them making them fighters and in the end writing them a death sentence. To those that fight to stop cruelty to ALL animals INCLUDING the pit I salute you and fight with you the more of us that stand against it the more we can save its up to all of us to make it end. <3

  57. I cried. I cried happiness that someone finally captured exactly what I feel in my own heart. And I cried because I know that everything you write is true - they are the number one breed being put down. Most pounds and shelters will not adopt but to rescues, drastically reducing their chances of a possible adoption. I also know that when I look in the eyes of my Polly, who was once a stray and saved because of having greeted the Animal Control officer as sweetly as she did, that I see any undying devotion to me. I have a saved golden and a saved lab/chow, and while they looooooovvvvvveeee me, it's my Polly that is enamoured with me. Thank you so much for everything you do.....Jo, Atlanta

  64. After adopting my girl I feel the same you do but for the ones depressed. I think we have some sort of mission in life and our heart goes to something, like no problem will be unsolved because the universe brings each person with one mission and if this person decides to live their lives just having fun, another one will come to accomplish this mission.

But I'll surely keep my eyes open when next time to adopt comes for Pitbulls, I didn't know they wait like that in shelters.

Like you specialized in Pitbulls I want to do the same for depressed dogs with no self confidence, and I'm not against Pitbulls so who knows.
You're right, their big heads are adorable.

Do you know the pitbull song? As a pitbull lover I think you would indentify with that a lot :)

    BLESS YOU Ashley!!!!

I have never had a bad experience with a Pit Bull. I don't have one, but I've known a few. They are very loving, loyal animals who do not deserve the reputation they have.

  77. Great post. My husband and I have two pitters, rescued from the NYC Animal Care and Control (a very high kill shelter). We have a male and a female, both about 2-3 years old now. Less than a year after we adopted them, we had our first baby, who is now 8 months old. Our dogs love us, but they adore our son...they put up with everything from him and just keep coming back for more. I've had dogs my whole life, many different breeds (retrievers, hounds, shepherds) and I have never had dogs like these, who are so intensely loyal, so desperate to be loved and reassured, so cuddly, so expressive. It's not a breed for everyone, to be sure...they're big, strong, clever, opportunistic, and tend to not like unfamiliar dogs...but if you can be a stong and loving leader for them, they are simply amazing pets. They've won us over for sure...we are pit owners for life now.

    ReplyDelete
  78. This was amazing!!! I want to rescue pit bulls one day! I have one right now and me and m boyfriend have completely fallen in love with the breed. You are totally right when you say that you have never met a breed more deserving of life, very well said!

  79. Thx for this!!! This is beautiful and so very true. THere are no bad dogs, only bad owners.

  80. We had a pitbull for 2 years until he died of leukemia apparently. He was well loved by the family. When he got sick, my mom fed him. Even when he was at his worst and we had to leave him at the dog clinic, he didn't want to leave us or be left alone. Unfortunately, we heard the bad news a day after. Maybe he missed us so much that he can't bear his sickness anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Maybe it's because people like you constantly whining about "Pit Bulls" being different. I find it annoying how you make them seem like something above any other dog in a shelter. Maybe it's people like you that write lame, drawn out stories about a dog. Maybe it's because of you that people decide to "rescue" one of these dogs and end up bringing it back to the shelter.

Yes, Pit Bulls are great but not everyone should have one. Quit playing the victim card and move on! Most of your posts are so pathetic! Move on like your dog does and enjoy everyday instead of bitching and moaning

Greetings from an animal lover, sad by the truth that animals are seen like materials here in Japan (I'm not japanese) so I started to rescue 2 puppy mill moms, 4 stray cats, wishing I could also rescue a cow, a pig and a chicken. LOL

Not all japanese are like this but I've seen so many cases...

      They are my life.
