RIP Mister Kitty

My name is Mister Kitty.
I went to Heaven last night.

I'm not here to share the story of my death.
I'm here to share the story of my life...

In my few short months here on Earth, I was so proud to be the Lucky Dog Rescue kitty. I was the only kitty there, which made me the luckiest kitty in the whole wide world.

But early on... I didn't feel so "lucky."

When I was just a tiny baby kitten, I was dumped on the Lucky Dog property by some not-so-nice people. They threw me out of their car and drove away real fast... without me. It was the meanest thing that's ever happened to me, and I was just so scared to be alone in the dark.

After that happened, I knew I couldn't trust people much... so I hid out in the bushes, hoping that no one would find me...

But even though I tried to pick the very best hiding spot, it didn't take long for someone to find me. Her name was Miss Ashley. The day after I was dumped, she was walking this big ole dog right past me, when she spotted me hiding there in the bushes. She stopped, smiled, and said, "Well hello there, Mister Kitty."

But I wouldn't dare come out for her. No way! I was just too scared. So... I felt pretty relieved when Miss Ashley walked away from me. But then, a couple of minutes later, she came right back, with 2 bowls: one food, one water.

Each day, Miss Ashley would come back to my secret hiding spot, with more food and more water. She'd never force me to come out of the bushes, but I could tell that she really wanted me to.

Even though she was so nice to me, I still didn't trust her. But if I'm being honest... I felt some comfort in the words she'd always say: "Maybe you don't like me, Mister Kitty, but I sure do love you. Maybe one day you'll love me, too."

I guess now would be a good time to tell you... that I'm actually A GIRL KITTY... NOT a Mister Kitty. But since I'd never come out of those bushes to let Miss Ashley get a good look at me... it took her a while to realize that I was really a girl. But either way, I kinda liked that name: Mister Kitty. I'm a tough little kitty... so the name felt right, and it stuck.

Over time, I got a little more brave, and I started to follow Miss Ashley around the property. I didn't know why... but I really wanted to love her as much as she loved me. She never forced herself on me, and I think that's why I liked her. She slowly gained my trust, and soon... she stole my heart.

But it took me a while to realize... that I'd stolen her heart, too.

Missy & Mister Kitty
One day, I was being my silly kitty self, and I climbed right up a real big tree. While I was up there, on top of the world, my leg got stuck between the branches, and I couldn't get back down. I was up there for a real long time, and I was so scared that Miss Ashley would never find me.

Finally, I heard her calling, "Mister Kitty?!" from real far away. So, I let out the loudest meow I could muster, hoping it would help her find me. Then, she came running toward me, looking up in the trees, until her eyes found mine. And do you know what she did?? Miss Ashley climbed right up to the top of that tree... freed my leg, secured me in her arms, and brought me back down to safety.

That's when I knew that Miss Ashley would always be there for me, and finally... I knew that I was home...

Being a kitty who lived at Lucky Dog Rescue, I soon decided that I wanted to be a dog instead. I quickly learned which dogs liked me... and which dogs didn't. I had the best time of my life living as a "Lucky Dog."

But yesterday, I got hurt, and I cried out for Miss Ashley. She ran to me, scooped me up, and rushed me to the vet just as fast as she could. My body was going into shock, and I was so scared. I could tell that Miss Ashley was real scared, too, but she didn't want to show it.

In the car, my Ashley-Mom was crying. As she gently rubbed my head, she was pleading with me, "Please, Mister Kitty... just hold on for me. I'm right here, and we're gonna get you all better. Please, just stay with me."

I wanted to stay with her forever, but I knew in my heart that I wasn't going to make it. But Miss Ashley didn't know that yet... or she just refused to believe it, because she wasn't ready to let me go.

When we got there, Miss Ashley was sobbing as she talked to the vet. Then... she looked at me, and gave me one last hug, one last kiss, and one last "I love you." That's how I knew it was okay to go.

I left my Ashley-Mom for Heaven on November 20, 2011.

Today, my Ashley-Mom and Miss Caycee buried me at Lucky Dog Rescue. As Miss Caycee covered my body with dirt, Miss Ashley sat on the ground next to me, and sobbed. She didn't know that I could see her, but I was right there with her the whole time. I've always been right there with her... since my very first day here... and I'll never really be gone...

When she gets to Heaven, my Ashley-Mom hopes to see a long line of dogs waiting to greet her. But now... a kitty will be waiting there too. A Mister Kitty, the Lucky Dog kitty.

*Dear Mister Kitty, my heart is so broken today. For months now, you've been right here by my side... my constant companion. I hope you know just how amazing it was for me... as you learned to trust me... to love me. It was nothing short of incredible. I save dogs for a living, but you were the kitty who stole my heart, in a way I didn't know was possible. I hope you know just how much I love you, and just how much I miss you. Now, there's a huge hole here at Lucky Dog... where you used to be. And there's a Mister-Kitty-sized-hole... in my heart. Love, Mom

Having been through the loss of so many dogs an cats in my life, I always try to be stoci in the face of a loss and I almost never succeed. I am so sorry for your loss. I know that hole in the heart feeling from the loss of a cat I loved. I wish there was some comfort to offer you, but all I can say is Mister Kitty was loved and loved you back. Sometimes it's not the length of time they're with us, but the amount of love given. I am so terribly sorry and cry for your loss.

  3. I am so sorry for your loss!!!! Your Mister Kitty looks like my Kiki Kitty!!! I have lost several babies over the years and unfortunately, it doesn't get any easier! When you truly love, you get hurt! The only thing that helps, is to know that YOU took that baby in and YOU gained her love and trust and YOU made her last days on this earth HER BEST DAYS!!!! She may not be there physically but I can guarantee you she's there in spirit!!!

  5. you just made me want to hold my kitties even closer. as a matter fo fact, i can barely see my keyborad because of one! I have 5 and a dog all because i never wanted the risk of them being in a shelter. Sometimes all it takes is the love of one to open your hears, and that is what i think Mr. Kitty did for you, she opened your heart to kitties as well. I am truly sorry for your loss, and cried through out the whole story.

  7. Ashley-

You did the most amazing thing ever and that was you gave that cute kitty the life it always wanted, LOVE... Cats don't ask for much but love and affection and they give the greatest love back. I know mister kitty is still in your heart and who knows one day mister kitty will send a kitty your way to give hope and love and life like you did for her. I am so sorry for your loss. People losing an animal to passing or having to give them another home is painful. I hope in time your heart will heal. Just know that you did something very special. :)

I too know the feeling of losing a beloved cat before their time. It seems so terribly unfair that their lives are inherently shorter than ours to begin with. My heart goes out to you during this tough time. Know that you gave an animal love when know one else would, and that you saved her life. I'm sure she is smiling down on you.

    Best wishes.

  13. Oh Ashley, I am so, so sorry. :-( My heart is breaking for you. My foster dog was just adopted and there is an ache in my heart that I fear will never go away, even though I know she is safe and happy. It's amazing the effect a tiny animal can have on a human's heart, especially one as huge as yours. You will be in my prayers. RIP Mister Kitty. :-(

  20. Dear Ashley,
I'm so sorry for your loss, but you must realize that for the short time Mister Kitty was here, you showed her nothing but love and that was something she wouldn't have known without you.
You did everything you could have, but that doesn't make it hurt any less.. Bless you for loving Gods furbabies.
Mister Kitty knew you were special and I hope that she's running and playing in Heaven with all the other babies who have passed before her.
Thank you for caring, she was truly blessed to have had you in her life...

I have no words to mend the pain you feel right now, all I can say is that I wish and pray to God there were more people like you in this earth, these animals really need someone to care for them and love them like you do. I, too am an animal lover. I adopted a kitten from the shelter a few moths ago and I now am heart broken to find that he has FIP. I love him with all my heart and I show him that every single day. I spoil him and will do anything and everything to make him feel better. These are our little angels, which no matter what happens, they will always know that we loved them indescribably. You're an amazing woman and Mister Kitty was so lucky to find you.

  84. I'm so sorry for the loss of Mr. Kitty. You were a great mom. I lost my Ms. Kitty a few months ago. I had been unemployed for the better part of a year when her health started to fail after 16 years of friendship. I was actually grateful for the time off and was able to encourage her through her last days...with special feedings and necessary special treatment. She was always very feisty, but she was my friend and we trusted each other. I believe that she actually chose the one day that I was not there to 'go' (when I went to the nursing home to visit my grandmother). Of course, I felt guilty that I was not there (luckily my boyfriend was). I know that she knew, I prayed over her most nights asking God to let me know when the time was right. Instead she made the decision for me. She was so frail in her last days, but I will always remember her as my tough alley cat from Savannah that I rescued from certain death. May you remember the happy memories of Mr. Kitty. I'm sure he will always be there. He knew the love of a very kind human...you.

  89. Ok, Miss Ashley, i am in tears once again today. You reminded me of how i felt a year ago when i thought i was going to loose my kitty who i adopted after i lost my sight in my one eye 6 years ago. She is my faithful companion when i couldn't see at all for a short time. I truly know how you feel and i am very sorry for your loss. Usually, those who work with the injured and sick, tend to loose their sensitivity to emotion but, you are a true angel, angels never loose their hearts and always feel the pain and loss of a loved one. You have truly earned your wings a thousand times over i am sure. Stay kind and sweet! ; )

  92. Oh, Ashley...I am so, so sorry your lost your precious Baby today. I pray you feel comfort from the days Mr. Kitty was in your life on earth. I know and feel your grief and I realize We can only grieve in our own way. I lost one of my precious Baby's this past May and I thank God for the 9 years he allowed her to be in my life - I rescued her as a stray when she was 5-6 weeks old. She was a special needs kitty, blind in one eye (probably since birth). With tears and sadness for you as I read your thoughts...my deepest sympathy to you. Dottie <3

  93. Ashley - There is no greater pain and no more honor than being adopted by a scared little kitty like that - five have adopted me! I had my 4 for 16 years and still have my Kiddu - they were all neglected and abandoned and they stole my heart like no other.

They were my babies. My heart is heavy for you. Thank you for sharing your Mister Kitty with us! I will always remember Mister Kitty!

  101. Ash... as much as our hearts break the moment we lose our pets, our companions, our family, the love and the joy and memories of all that they are, who they were keep us going till the day we meet them again, where they have been watching over us, protecting us, loving us from afar. As much as we grieve, we need to let them go,so they can cross over to pave the way for the rest of the family and do all of the above.. they come into our lives be it for a minute, be it weeks, be it months, be it a lifetime, they come because they want to share the time with us...and they will be with you were ever you go each day...my heart felt thoughts are with you...

  107. So beautifully written. I cried my eyes out. I lost one of my cats about 8 months ago and I lost my sweet GSD Lolo 6 months ago to cancer. It's a horrible thing to not have them with us here, but they are waiting for us and we will see them again. Breathe and just remember the love you share with them.

  110. I'm so sorry, Ashley. You are not alone. You are surrounded by people who love you, dogs who love you and are thankful for you saving their lives, and Mister Kitty who will always be with you in your heart. I know all too well that words feel a bit hollow when your heart carries a gaping hole, but they are true nonetheless. I commented similarly on your most recent blog post, now I understand why you posted it, I've just seen Mister Kitty's story. She was so blessed to have you - and vice versa. Her story reminds me so much of my Boo - I rescued him from the city streets of Richmond, VA. He didn't trust anyone. He was terrified of people, he ate from trash cans, but over a year's time he came to trust me and my roommate. Eventually, I was able to take him to the vet, and I got him neutered. I intended to adopt him out - and he sure did find his forever home. With me and my other furkids. I was so in love with him, there was no way I could give him up. He was with me for more than a decade. Monday will be one year to the day since he crossed the Bridge. I'm struggling, already. I have not lived a day since that he hasn't been on my mind, I miss him so so much. A lot of people don't understand that kind of love - but you do. Other people here who follow your blog do. I am thankful for you, for your followers. I know it's a horrible time, but you are not alone. Though we may not know you personally, we love you.

  111. I lost my best friend last month my 16 yr. old Corgi mix (Bear) and a 20 yr. named Bailey last week and I am afraid I'm losing my pit bull mix, Farley, very shortly.... The joy they bring to our lives is immeasurable but the pain that is felt from their passing is unbearable.... Stay strong for the countless other rescues that you will find forever homes for.... I am trying to do the same.... It is so very hard to do but we must for their sakes.... Dogs Rule and Mister Kitty does also.... Doc T.

  112. I really didnt want to cry tonight. Im having such "human" issues right now, that the last thing on my mind was to cry to let them out. Then I stumbled upon your website, looked around for a doggie, then left the website, and somehow found my way back to the site. I read this story, and instantly, cried. One of those cries that when you start, you just cry about everything. It's even harder because im not with my two kitties right now since im away visiting with family. I sit here and think of how down or sad I am, and I realize it would be different, maybe a tad, if I had my two cats with me. I dont think people realize how much of a blessing animals really really are. They are angels without the wings, but with a soul that is unexplainable. Id encourage every person in this world to own a pet, I really think life would be different, ya know. I am sorry for your loss, and I do wish you the best in finding homes for all the pets.

  117. My constant companion, Lucky, a black cat, died three months after I lost my mom unexpectedly. His brother, Sparky, died last October. I am still not over the losses of all --Mom, Lucky and Sparky.

I try to remember good times, but it makes me cry. I know I will see them in Heaven and some days I can't wait to get there.

Thank you for loving Mister Kitty. She died knowing love and you made her life a billion times better.

    I'm mourning with you.

  119. I am so sorry that you lost such a beautiful friend. Whether one day or ten years in your heart, it is always hard when one crosses the Rainbow Bridge. Star in your crown for your kindness and love to animals. I have 5 rescue cats and 3 dogs and wish I could take more but space won't allow. Still though I do tend to stop, feed, help - as much as I can. God be with you Ashley.

  122. I know your pain, your loss, your sadness, and your emptiness. My heart and love goes out to you. I cry and grieve with you.

I too, have lost 2 beautiful babies...one in August and one in September. I lost a 5 year old Russian Blue, Stormy and a 3 month old Savannah, Astro. I have seen the life go out of a kittens eyes and there was nothing you could do but pray, cry, and scream. I know what it is like to have a dog put to sleep because she has suffered enough and there was no more to do. I have seen the birth of four kittens and only one survive.

I just rushed a little 6 month old kitten, Ebony 90 mph to the vet Wednesday who had an accident and didn't know if he was going to survive. I was so scared and crying. I am glad to say, he is home and is going to be ok.

Everywhere you go, everywhere you look....your babies are there. Such a big hole is left and nothing seems the same without them. I miss my babies terribly! Just know....it does get a little easier, but you never forget them. Something always reminds you.

Know this.....you will see your baby again in heaven. I truly believe that! I expect my babies to be there waiting on me.

My prayers and my love go out to you for all you do to save Gods little creatures and for your loss of your little Angel....

I try to save all I can at your site. I take care of 21 cats and I have found homes for another 22 cats this past last three years. It breaks my heart to hear of one of Gods creatures being put down for any reason other than health.

Please keep helping us save those little babies<3

  123. It's so hard when they leave, especially when it's too soon. Mister Kitty's story made me cry, but then it doesn't take much when it comes to the furbabies. I love them all so much. So sorry, Ashley, that she had to leave so soon. I know you're hurting and missing her now. At least she knew love from one human while she was here. Some are not that fortunate, as you well know. Bless you for what you do for them.

  126. Oh my gosh. I almost got through without crying. I'm so sorry about Mr. Kitty. But at least in her short life she got to learn what it felt like to be loved; and she didn't have to die alone. You did a wonderful thing, Ashley. Mr. Kitty will never forget you. And now, neither will I.
