Animal Rescue Humor

Need a laugh today? Good. Here's some animal rescue humor, from my smart-ass mouth to you:

"I want to adopt a dog, because I want to save a life. However, that life must be a registered, purebred, male, Miniature Yorkie, who weighs exactly 2.5 pounds. The life cannot be more than 8 weeks old, and I expect him to be potty trained. I request specific markings, and details about the bloodline. If you do not have the puppy I desire, then please don't suggest another dog in-need. This is the only life I'm willing to save. And you're welcome."

"I'm donating a bag of items for your rescue dogs. No need to thank me; these are just some old things we don't need anymore. Here are several, moldly, chewed-up water bowls, with massive holes in the bottom. Sure, they can't currently hold water, but with some labor, caulk, and duct tape... and approximately 10 to 12 runs through an industrial-strength dishwasher, they'll be as good as new. Here are some teeny-tiny, shredded pieces of what used-to-be smelly, old blankets. If you'll just spend the next few days sewing them all together... with the sewing machine you don't have... then this should be enough to keep one, very-small dog real warm. Here are some crusted, disgusting, old toys that our dogs destroyed and peed on. I know your dogs will love them. And here's some dog food that we left sitting out in the rain. Same as wet food, right? So, it looks like your dogs are all set! I'll need a tax receipt now."

"I wanna get a new dog. My last one disappeared. Nope, he didn't run away, and nope, he wasn't stolen. That dog just flippin' vanished into thin air. Weirdest thing. Pretty sure he was raptured. Either way, I wanna get a new one, and I'm thinking you can help me. But I'll go ahead and tell ya, this one ain't coming inside the house. I'm still dodging piss from the last one we let in there. Instead, this dog can roam free, right next to the busy highway. If he's smart, he'll be just fine. If not, I'll just come back for another one. And I don't believe in vet care, 'cause my pastor says it's a scam. Don't matter anyway... I ain't got no money for no damn vet care. Alrighty then, when can I pick one up?"

"I need you to take this dog. He just showed up at my house. If this were any other dog, I'd be willing and happy to help him. But this one's a Pit Bull, so I cannot help this dog. That's where you come in. He seems to be pretty friendly... from what I can see through the screen door. I'll be damned if I'm gonna open it, for fear of my freaking life. He's wagging his tail real fast, so he's probably about to attack me. He's clearly starving to death, so you're gonna need to feed him... when I dump him at your place without permission. Oh, and I'm willing to donate 5 bucks. No need to thank me. It's the least I can do."

"Ashley, I read your blog every single day, and I just want you to know how very much I hate every single thing you write. And I reeeally hate you. What the hell is a freaking CHARITY doing asking for DONATIONS?? You oughta be ashamed of yourself, girl! Asking people to donate toward a charitable cause that saves lives and provides a service to this community. What the hell is wrong with you? Seriously, why you always got to beg? Beg, beg, beg! You oughta bury your head in the sand, girl... wasting your life running a damn charity for a living. Grow up already! I'd really be ashamed if I was you. But nope, I'm not ashamed to be me. Sure, I wasted a lot of useless time searching for your phone number, just so I could call and leave this pointless, stupid-ass message. And of course, I'm a coward, who blocked my number from view before I called you. But clearly, I'm proud of what I have to say... and I'm not the least bit embarrassed to admit that I have nothing better to do with my time... than stalk a blog that I clearly hate, written by a girl that I hate even more... every single day of my life. That's just the kind of good person I am. You suck, Ashley!"

And on that note...

  8. Dear Rescue,
Our family wants to adopt dog X from your program...we allow our pets to ride in the open bed of our truck, we do not believe in vaccinations or spaying, and we have a great dog run that we are certain any dog would love (especially on -10 degree Wyoming days). Oh, and we would like to negotiate the adoption fee because we have to drive 20 miles to pick up the dog. Please reply in the next five minutes, because we are looking at 7 other dogs too.

  9. You didn't mention the morons who show up at adoption events.....with the dog they want to dump on you, (What do you mean you can't take him now, you are a rescue, right? Besides, I have the dog out in the car!) because they are moving and the new place doesn't take dogs. I always want to slap the happy out of them! I've moved a million times (Thanks, US Army!) and the FIRST thing I ask each new rental is can my furbabies come. If not, I look elsewhere...

  10. OMG!! Why does it surprise me that there are such IDIOTS out there who put their stupidity in writing?

  11. You know, I got a chuckle out of this blog, but then stopped in mid chuckle.....IDIOTS REALLY DO THESE THINGS and that's why there are so many dogs in trouble out there.......now I'm sad...............

You should feel very honored that someone would spend so much of their time and energy to tell you they hate you......maybe the American Cancer Society was next..................

  12. sadly it truly IS that bad out there sometimes....I read the craigslist ads and cry over them (no time, too big, have a baby coming, moving oh but I LOVE LOVE LOVE my pet!) plueeze! ok so if the person DIED that might be an excuse....I have major health issues-had to give up full time rescue work-then lost our home to a complete burn out-most of our pets too-but I still have my 4 since then rescued dogs and 3 rescued cats...(theirs is the first food and treats purchased even before our own-and give people training tips to keep their pets in their homes....GRR! There was one we saw years ago about a tongue in cheek ad where the family was giving away their kids for the many excuses we hear on why dogs have to go-wish I could find it again.....

  13. Nothing that a 38 can't solve.

When I see this stuff, it's no wonder we devote our time to the dogs. People are asshats.

  14. Don't feel bad for me! I laughed all day at that last message! It was soooo incredibly stupid, and so entertaining.

I'd like to give a shout-out to that terrible woman... since I know she's reading this... for not only wasting her time & energy reading my dinky blog, but also wasting her breath on that dumb-ass message. Thanks for the laugh :)

I actually saved that voicemail... just so I can replay it every time I need to laugh at how ridiculous the idiots of this world truly are :)

  17. hey I DID find it! here it is (tho as an animal lover......hmmmm......rofl) Please help!!!! After two long years of being on a waiting-list for a
dog, we have been notified by the breeder that, at long last, our number
has come up and … we are having a PUPPY!!! We must get rid of our
children immediately because we just know how time consuming our new
little puppy is going to be and it just wouldn’t be fair to the children.
Since our little puppy will be arriving on Monday we MUST place the
    children into rescue this weekend!

They are described as: One male – His name is Tommy, English/Irish mix,
light blonde hair, blue eyes. Four years old. Excellent disposition. He
doesn’t bite. Temperament tested. Does have problems with peeing directly
in the toilet. Has had Chicken Pox and is current on all shots. Tonsils
have already been removed. Tommy eats everything, is very clean, house
trained & gets along well with others. Does not run with scissors and
with a little training he should be able to read soon.

One female – Her name is Lexie, English/Irish mix, strawberry blonde
hair, green eyes, quite freckled. Two years old. Can be surly at times.
Non-biter, thumb sucker. Has been temperament tested but needs a little
attitude adjusting occasionally. She is current on all shots, tonsils
out, and is very healthy & can be affectionate. Gets along well with
other little girls & little boys but does not like to share her toys and
therefore would do best in a one-child household. She is a very quick
learner and is currently working on her house training… it shouldn’t
    take long at all.

We really do LOVE our children so much and want to do what’s right for
them; that is why we contacted a rescue group. But we simply can no
longer keep them. Also, we are afraid that they may hurt our new puppy. I
hope you understand that ours is a UNIQUE situation and we have a real
    emergency here!!!

They MUST be placed into your rescue by Sunday night at the latest or we
will be forced to drop them off at the orphanage or along some dark
country road. Our priority now has to be our new puppy.

  18. A special note to the hater who left the message on your machine about begging for money (since the person reads your blog):

You, maam, are an IDIOT. Non-profit charities are exactly that: they are organizations with a mission that do not make a profit from what they do. Where do you suppose the money comes from for them to do that work? It comes from donations, DUMBASS. You know all those places out there that feed the hungry, and shelter homeless people, and help rape victims and victims of child abuse? You know Toys for Tots and the Susan Koman foundation that helps women with breast cancer? Just where the fuck do you think those organizations get the money to do their work? Do you think God just rains money down on them from the sky? They operate on donations that generous, compassionate people supply. So while you are so busy criticizing a non-profit organization for trying to obtain the funds to continue to do their selfless work, other people are changing the world by donating.

  19. Ashley, I give you high fiveS for sharing these hilarious blogs! It never ceases to amaze me how dumb the general public can be. I applaud you for taking the higher road and trying to make the world a better place for our furry friends. I hope that if, and when, you might feel discouraged, please reread this and know there are people out there that support you and are true fans of your awesome doings!!! Bless you Ashley!!! :) have a pawesome day!!!

  20. Damn, did you steal my answering machine? No wait, mine had another message from the backyard breeder in Boonie-ville wanting me to take all her elderly, blind, no lower jaw dogs, and she would need a receipt for her tax write off.

  21. Well I'd just like to say that after coming across pet pardons and lucky dogs rescue.. Ashley inspired me to foster and I'm currently on my second foster puppy and loving it!!

  22. I actually once had a woman mail me a swatch of fabric and wanted me to tell her which of the rescue Wheatens would match her furniture best!

  23. Wow...aren't people just amazing?!?!? My favorite one was this weekend at our adoption fair: "Is this Chihuahua puppy spayed? She is, really? What a shame...I was going to breed her." Took all my will power not to end up on the evening news "Rescue volunteer beats idiot with dog toy".

  24. Love your blog entries....most of the times they make me cry (for good reasons) but today I'm rolling on the floor laughing.....sad thing is I bet these are real! You just keep doing what you're doing Ms. Ashley and we'll keep supporting you, after all we're nuts too!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks to that coward who left the hate message, I made a donation. It wasn't a lot but I hope it helps some.

    ReplyDelete
  26. One word, Ashley . . . . KARMA !!! For you AND for the idiots. Keep up the good work -- you are loved and admired.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sadly I am not surprised by any of this! :( It's a sad sad selfish world out there! But I appreciate what you do! Thank you for saving lives! And just chalk those ignorant comments up to selfishness & complete stupidity! And just keep on doing what your doing & know that there are a few people with care & compassion in this world! And your one of them ! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wow!!! Thanks for the laugh Ashley. I really am in awe of some of the things people say (or write) to you regarding your rescue. The nerve of some people!! Just know that YOU ARE AMAZING and what you do for these dogs is invaluable!!!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being wonderful and for opening up your heart and committing your life to saving others. Keep on doing it Ashley.... you are doing great things!!!

  29. Are you kidding me? Are people really that stupid? Girl! How DO you DO it? You are an angel!!

  30. i thought you were gonna make me laugh? I sit here feeling helpless as I advocate (have cut down to 48hrs to live) on pet pardons, because there are just tooo many. until my fingers cramp and eyes are useless due to tears. I donate very little because my budget is almost nil. but am thankful for my unemployment. I watch my ever changing neighbors and their pets, making sure the pets are not neglected or abused. i cant make it down to a rescue or shelter at the moment (no bus fare) to volenteer. i am depressed I cannot be of more help to our fourlegged friends and victems, I really needed a laugh and your blog just a reminder of how impossibly stupid and cruel people are. so next time you offer a laugh...please make it funny.
You are my idol everything you do for all the animals you help...when I grow up I wanna be just like you! (fyi, Im probaly old enough to be your mom) Keep up the great work you do it gets me threw another day...

  31. Paws up Ashley! That was really funny. I also thoroughly enjoyed the videos you all made some time back. I've watched them all and I can just imagine the conversations you must have with all the morons out there. You are amazing. Thankfully, there are some really nice people out there who support you and some who may even step forward to adopt or foster. Now I bet THAT would be what we used to call 'one in a row!' Just kidding. I hope you have really, really good adopters and/or fosters and/or people who donate bunches every day from now on out. You deserve it. Susan Collins from FB.

  32. Wow are there really human beings out there that don't even try to sound stupid but just are? Well you sure gave me a laugh today Ashley. Your still an Angel in my eyes, and I will continue to pray for your strength to get things done, besides having to deal with idiots. Love ya girl, Darlene

  33. If you didn't laugh, then it's probably because you haven't experienced these things in real life. But many of us have... and many people understood the humor in this post. We have to laugh, or we'll just cry or scream.

Either way, being rude is unnecessary. If you didn't like this post, that's fine by me! But I don't think I was rude to you... soo...

Regardless, I speak a language. It's called sarcasm. That's my sense of humor. If you don't like it, that's okay. But I'm just being me. Take it or leave it :)

  34. Ashley, your work is necessary and needed, and you are a saint for doing it.
You are WAY more loved than otherwise.
    Peace and blessings to you.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Actually, a lot of that is not far off. I am a trainer and continually have to guilt people into doing what is right for their dog. I just had a lady who left her dog 10 hrs. a day in a crate. I explained that was abuse and she should either pay someone to walk her pooch or find a daycamp… she wouldn’t do it. Said it would cost money. Wouldn’t shorten her lunch hour to walk it herself. Wouldn’t re-home it..cause she “loved” it.

  36. HAHHAHA. I love those statements. I remember the same thing I did on a particular situation.

  37. I'm still laughing at at the part about the dog being raptured!

Bless you, Ashley for doing what you do even when the idiots of the world put obstacles in your way. Together we shall overcome! :)

I also had a good laugh reading the comments from others' experiences. Raptured...LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thank you for the laughs Ashley.... and for the reminder that some people are truly ignorant... it isn't just that they suck! (sorry to be so blunt, but they do). Thank you for all that you do for the animals.... G-d bless you!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I've said it before and I'll say it again...you are a true blessing to this world Ashley and don't you let anyone tell you different. You can't change stupid (as evidenced by the examples you shared) and we need to quit trying. ;) Although I tell you what, that dog has a better chance of being 'raptured' than the idiot who surmised that is what happened to it. And we can only hope these people haven't been allowed to breed.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ashley, don't ever let it get you down, you are a beautiful person and what you do is special and has a lot of meaning. Never forget there is a special place in heaven for people like you and then you will be worth all the friends that have already crossed the rainbow bridge. Never stop, those sweet animals need you, never mind why those a holes say, we all know where they are going in there next life. We all love you lady and always remember what a wonderful, special person you are. Love you, Teresa

  41. You are awesome!!! I now have a quote hanging by my ridiculous desk at work that says "I use sarcasm because beating the crap out of people is in fact frowned upon in most societies." I hope it made you laugh too. Sadie

  42. What a hoot! I'm sure you've seen it all and then some. Wow, how the human race has evolved into such an intelligent one............loved the blog as always.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ashley, your blog is awesome and people like this are the exact reason I prefer DOGS over most humans. Trudge on with laugher, love and hoep that rescues everywhere can make THE difference over uneducated people!!! And Pit Bulls need love too!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow! Obviously there are many idiots out there drifting through life. Too bad everyone could not be like you Ashley...if that were the case we would not need rescue organization for someone who has nothing better to do with their time to bitch about! Glad you take it with a sense of humor.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I need that laugh today!! LMAO!! And I can't believe someone left you a message like that! That pretty terrible! Great outlook on the situation by saving it for a laugh!! :) Love reading your post to see that our rescue isn't the only one having these issues!!! :)

  46. Gah! People suck!! Ashley, you are amazing! A true hero, a real inspiration. Much love to you and all the fur babies! <4

  47. And I thought I heard some excuses! We did have a lady who dumped her cat because they got new furniture, and the cat didn't match anymore...
We are a foster for cats AND pitbulls. Sometimes it gets overwhelming, and I think about quitting... But reading your blog helps. People wonder how we do it.. I wonder how they don't. Thanks for keeping all of us going when we need a pick-me-up.

    ReplyDelete
  48. this really pissed me off..especially the one about the pitbull...

  49. Oh my goodness, this is too funny...I'm reading your archives so I'm a million years late in leaving a reply on this post, but this cracked me up...I'm part of a cat rescue group and replace "dog" with "cat" in each of these, and we've heard them all before :) Oh, and my absolute favorite "My last three cats were killed by coyotes that come through our property so I want to adopt another kitten...and no, we won't keep it indoors, our property is pretty safe"
