Due to the location of her home... which is right off the interstate... her property has become a virtual dumping ground for unwanted dogs. She's constantly struggling to deal with the numbers of dogs thrown out at her house. However, the condition of this particular dog was much worse than the others she usually finds when she walks outside.
The woman named the dog Patrick. Then, she frantically started posting the dog on facebook, desperately searching for help for this poor boy.
I was busy at work that morning, so I hadn't yet seen any of those urgent posts about this dog. But it didn't take long for the calls, texts, and messages to start pouring in...
First, I talked to my friend, Cathy, who asked me to check the photo she'd posted on my wall and call her back. Hearing the concern in her voice, I knew it was bad...
When I saw the picture, instantly, my heart was broken. No matter how many times I view a photo like that... it never gets any easier. And no matter how much cruelty I witness... I'll never understand how people can be so damn hateful... how any person could force a dog to suffer in this way... and then dump him on the side of the road like trash.
When I talked to Cathy again, I told her I'd try to figure something out, and I'd need to talk to the woman as well. But before I even had time to think, there were more texts and calls coming in, begging me to take this dog.
So, later that day, I asked my friend Dana to comment on Patrick's facebook post for me, and simply say: "Ashley Owen Hill has committed to take this dog." Then, I talked to the woman who had him, and we worked out the details.
Me, Patrick, & the woman who found him |
On Tuesday, Caycee and I drove to meet the woman at her vet in Quitman, MS, so I could take Patrick home. Based on the photos of him, I thought I was prepared for what I'd see that day.
I was wrong...
I can't even explain in words just how underweight this dog truly is. The pictures don't do him justice. I can't even tell you just how sick he truly is. I can't even describe just how weak he truly is, as his little body fights to survive.
Further, in addition to everything else, at some point, his former "owners" made the cruel decision to perform a painful, homemade ear crop job on Patrick. As I try to imagine the cruelty he's known, all of his life... it's almost too much to bear.
When I first laid eyes on him, I was shocked. The only words I could muster were: "Oh dear God..." Then, I bent down, rubbed his head, and asked: "Who did this to you, buddy??"
And then... he looked up and gave me the sweetest little kiss, right on my chin. I looked over at Caycee, and simply said: "I'm in love!!!"
Just like that... I fell in love with a boy named Patrick. Or as I like to call him... "Patrick Star."
And in turn, my little Patrick Star... became a Lucky Dog... for the very first time in his life.
*Patrick has a long road of recovery ahead. He hasn't yet been tested for heartworms or neutered. For now, I'll be focused on weight gain, mange treatment, and getting his little body healthy again. If you'd like to donate to his care, please click below.
Thank you for continuing to help and love these sweet babies. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteBless your heart. He is soooo lucky to have you.
ReplyDeleteOh Ash, I am so thankful to God that you are there for Patrick. I pray for the animals all the time. I smile when I know another Lucky dog has come your way. I wish I had tons of money to give you for I would. For now, I pray to God to help you and the animals. You are loved and I thank God for you and all who do what they can for our babies.
ReplyDeleteSOmetimes AShley I wish you would just not write anything...I am running out of kleenex on a regular basis...lol! I don't know how you keep going, well actually I do, after all what other choice is there? You do an amazing job and we thank you for it. We would also like to congratulate you for your grant, way to go!
ReplyDeleteThank you for everything you have done!!!
ReplyDeleteGod Bless you. I know there is a special place in Heaven for you and the people who help our furry friends and I do hope there is a really hot place in Hell for the people who do this to any of God's creatures.
ReplyDeleteBless your heart for taking in this beautiful dog Patrick. It hurts me so much to see what some people can do to animals. May he become all he can.
ReplyDeleteOMG - this story has me in tears! I am always amazed at the cruelty that these babies have endured at the hands of a human...we call ourselves civilized...I beg to differ with that term when I see this baby and what he been through in his short life. I thank God everyday that there are enough caring people in the world that are willing to step up and take in an animal that has been abused. This little has a tough road ahead of him but it's not nearly as tough as it has been in the past. With enough love and care...hopefully this baby will replace all of the bad memories with only happy ones!!
ReplyDeleteRest up and eat up sweet boy!
ReplyDeleteI am unfortunately able to offer a financial donation however, I regularly advocate, and it breaks my heart as well at how often this sort of thing happens....... I really have a difficult time trying to figure these horrible people out. I am so grateful though that there are angels, as yourself, out there.. Thank you so much for doing and caring <3 I pray to one day have the means to do as you do... May the Lord continue to bless and guide you Ashley...
ReplyDeleteLord have mercy, girl. I don't know how you do it. Patrick is one lucky dog.
ReplyDeleteThank you for making Patrick Star a "Lucky Dog!"
ReplyDeleteI can't even begin to imagine the cruelty this sweet boy has had to endure. However...never again, thanks to you!!!
Get well Patrick Star...I look forward to watching your progress. :)
God Bless you Ashley...you are the best!
AMAZING! Thank you for taking Patrick!
ReplyDeleteAshley, you are an inspiration to dog lovers everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much and may God bless you for everything you do for these sweet animals!
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the woman who's house gets the most dumped animals, does she accept donations for dog food? Does she care for them until someone else can come for the dogs?
ReplyDeleteHey! There are several people who are working to help her with her situation :) Also, I told her she could keep the donations raised in the original chip-in they started for Patrick, so she could use that $ for food & vet care for the many other dogs. It was about $600, which she's using for spay/neuter, vaccinations, and food... until the rescuers working with her find homes for these dogs.
Deletehow payed the 1. Vet?
DeleteI am ashamed that I belong to the same human race as the people who do things like this to animals. Thank you and your volunteers for all that you do.
ReplyDeleteDenise-You don't belong to the same human race. You are a humane human, they are scum.
Deleteyup that is absolutely correct
Deleteto you who hates ....... i'm so sorry that you want to pick on denise , she only cares for animals . i hope you turn your hate into another energy . animals are precious and if don't like them why come to this site ? i hope you have a change of heart soon ........ fred, NORTH CAROLINA ....
DeleteAnonymousSeptember 21, 2012 9:47 PM - I think you misread the post above.
DeleteYou're right-the post was misread. I said she wasn't part of that persons human race, Denise is humane, the abuser is scum. Fred-I've never hated anyone or anything is my life. I adore fur babies and I wish I was in a position to do what Ashley and so many others do. Maybe one day.......there is so much need. Jayne-DEL.
DeleteCheck out Microtek products by Eqyss. They are gentle and work great on Mange. I sent a gallon of the shampoo and spray they recommended to a shelter in wv that had picked up 56 or so dogs that were dumped. They all had severe Mange. I called two weeks after they got it and they were all starting to get peach fuzz. Eqyss guarantees their products as well. Blessings - Heather
ReplyDeleteI share your grief about this poor baby's neglect. God bless you for always being there for animals everywhere. You stop their suffering, thank you, thank you, thank you.
ReplyDeleteYou and your people are angels......!!!!
DeleteThe NJ SPCA rescued a dog that was found in a dumpster at the end of a trash chute at a Newark NJ apartment. He was found by the maintenance man on St Patrick's Day 2011. They call him Patrick the Miracle. He too was thought dead from starvation. They caught his abuser and they are still waiting for the court case to be heard. It's been over a year of the abuser getting continuances. Patrick lives at the home of the vet who cared for him. He is actually at the point where he may need to lose a little weight. What you do is awesome. I pray that your Patrick will soon be another Patrick the Miracle. Jayne
ReplyDeleteI, too thought of the "other" Patrick. These Patricks look somewhat similar, and sadly, share similar stories. :( But thankfully and happily, they both now know love, kindness, care, and nourishment. I hope and pray that Patrick Star recovers as well as Pattick Miracle has done. Thank you, Ashley and Elly, and everyone else involved for all the wonderful things you do for these poor babies who never deserved the abuse and neglect they have suffered...they only deserve to be loved! <3
DeleteTHERE'S NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE LIKE THEM...& too many of the other kind...
ReplyDeleteI cried as I read this You are one awesome lady and that is one Lucky baby!!
ReplyDeleteU r one of the most amazing women in the world to me... Im crying my eyes out because Im so happy for Patrick and so happy that he has you. Thank you for all you do <3
ReplyDeleteYou are truly and Angel.
ReplyDeleteHe has hit the lottery of love in finding his way to your loving arms. Thank you over and over for all you do for those with no voice or hope.
ReplyDeleteYou have a special place in heaven reserved just for you..Hugs from Canada..
ReplyDeleteI wish there were more people in the world like us. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO!!!
ReplyDeleteI was in tears seeing the pictures of Patrick and reading the story about him. Thank god he is with you now ashley. I do not understand how someone can be so cruel to any animal. NMaybe it's the fact that he is part pit but that is no excuse for the way he has been treated. It would be nice to find out who did this and have them punished for what they did to him. I have 2 full grown pitties and they are treated just like human children. Keep up the good work and my prayers go out to you and all the dogs that you help.
ReplyDeletePlease never give up the good fight. You are their angel and we all admire your courage and determination to continue to create miracles for these dogs. XOXOX PAWS San Antonio, Texas
ReplyDeleteI am not able to help now with any cash donations. But I will share the story and try to get others to see and like your page. You are SO amazing, and I enjoy being a {though be it small} part of this!
ReplyDeleteThis had me in tears. Thank god for people like you. Please keep doing what you are doing, and saving poor souls like Patrick who otherwise would have had no hope.
ReplyDeleteYou are an inspiration and an awesome woman! Kisses to Patrick from France :)
So happy Patrick is safe and is being cared for so that he can be healthy again and live a long happy life. I heard about Patrick when Elly first found him and she was asking for help. It is because of her that Patrick is safe. She took him to her own vets to make sure he got the proper attention he needed. I do hope Elly can see him and watch his progress as he gets better. It will be great for her to see the handsome strong dog that Patrick really is and that she saved. Will be watching his progress and praying that he gets stronger every day. Thankyou for helping him and making him better from the UK xxxxxx
ReplyDeleteAshley- I say this every time that I post on your blogs... You are an angel and we are so fortunate to have you in the rescue community! I can imagine the heart ache you felt when you first met Patrick. I have tears in my eyes reading your story. Thank you for all that you do! You so deserve the Chase award that you received!!!

I agree with all those who say you are truly an Angel to Patrick! How lucky he is that you are taking care of him. Blessings to you and thank you for all you do! I am sure he will make a full recovery with all this love being showered on him!
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me anytime I read a story like this, the fact that any animal no matter the species or bread or anything has to go through something like this because our world is full of idiots that believe you can treat an animal as trash. I cannot say thank you enough for being a person who is willing to help this animal and many more to have the life that they should have. Here's hoping that Patrick makes a full recovery and gets the family that he wants and deserves.
ReplyDeleteThank you once again for being the person that you are.
Oh Ashley, I wish I could do more, as it is, I changed all my donation dollars to go to you on a monthly basis, but after hearing about poor Patrick Star, and his previous brutal life, it breaks my heart to not be able to do more for your wonderful organization. You have deserved a gold halo and wings for your nonstop love and rescues of these poor babies. Just know that there is a very special horrific place in hell for these low lives of the lowest form of mankind. They surely are not human. Your friend, Suzanne
ReplyDeleteOh, Ashley, thank you SO much!! I've just made my first donation to you for Patrick. I wish I lived near you to help. I hope one day to save lives like you do. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! HE is such a lucky dog to have found you and I pray he makes 110% recovery!!
ReplyDeleteThis little baby is breaking my heart. I can't even look at those pictures without wanting to cry. Thanks to you, Ashley and Elly and anyone else who helps out with these things, for having such huge hearts. You are truly wonderful people. I'm wishing sweet little Patrick all the best.
ReplyDeleteI hate people.....
ReplyDeleteMe too.. lol
DeleteCount me in on that one too!! People can be soooo cruel to an animal, I just don't understand how!!! God Bless you Ashley & thank you for all you sacrifice in order to take care of these poor dogs that some monster had mistreated & thrown away. I just sit & sob everytime I read one of your rescue stories. I get so upset that my family now begs me to stop reading them. I get hysterical, & can't stop sobbing over it. It just makes me sick to my stomach....Here I sit, listening to two dogs snore while sleeping within a couple feet of where I sit. The other 3 dogs are peacefully sleeping with two of my three cats sleeping nearby also. Here are 8 animals you don't need to worry about, they are ALL spayed/neutered with none of them ever contributing to the animal population. There are too many pups & kittens needing homes, I'm not going to add to the problem, I'm trying to become part of the solution!! God Bless You, Ashley Owen
DeleteGod bless you for taking care of this sweet boy and for showing that there ARE still decent people left in this world! Praying hard for Patrick and sharing him. I wish I had the funds to help, but for now I will share and when I get my next paycheck I will donate what I can.
ReplyDeleteDonated :) Get well soon Patrick!
ReplyDeleteI am happy to help. Thank God for you, Ashley ... and all the others like you.
ReplyDeletePatrick is such a lucky dog...Please let us see pics of his progress...I cannot get over how people can be so mean to an innocent animal...I hate to think how they treat humans...God will bless you greatly for taking care of these poor abused animals...the owners need to be made to suffer the same.
ReplyDeleteI am so thankful to God that you are there for Patrick. I pray for the animals all the time. I smile when I know another Lucky dog has come your way. I wish I had tons of money to give you for I would. For now, I pray to God to help you and the animals. You are loved and I thank God for you and all who do what they can for our babies.
ReplyDeleteAshley - you are a wonderful person. I donated $$$ for Patrick's vet care -- check your account! :) God Bless.
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking on a dog like this that could have fallen through the cracks of the system (or worse *shudder*) I'm sure he'll soon realize he hit the pup lotto when he got dumped at the lady's house! Patrick Star, may you from here on out only know love & kindness!
ReplyDeleteGod bless you and the lives you touch. I too can not donate at this time but advocate even stronger untill I can. May God bless you with all you need.
ReplyDeleteThere has to be a very special place in heaven for someone like you!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
ReplyDeleteoh wow, reading this and seeing the pictures makes me cry! You are truly an angel.
ReplyDeleteAshley - I am deeply Saddened to Know that it took this Dog to get you to Go and Help Elly - I Messaged you Months ago - Asking to You to Take her some Dog Food which We had Raised Money for as Her Dogs were Hungry - All we Needed was Someone to Deliver it. You lived Closer to her than Any of us and You couldn't even be Bothered to message me Back. Luckily We found an Angel who Coordinates Transports and She rerouted One of her Drivers to Take Dogs food that Needed it Desperately. I hope this Dog is NOT used for Raising Funds for your Rescue - Oh Wait - There is a Donate Button.....
ReplyDeleteAnnie ~ Before assuming, it would be wise to do a little fact-finding. You say you messaged Ashley -- are you sure your message reached her? And do you not understand she cannot be responsible for every situation? She may be nearer to that person than you, but that doesn't mean she can handle every problem. Perhaps you're angry because YOU didn't take care of things a little better. Sounds as though you're projecting your own issues. IMHO.
DeleteAnnie, it's awfully judgmental to slam on Ashley for not doing more to help Elly. She is only one person. I'm thankful to Ashley for taking on Patrick Star and also to Elly for her kindness in trying to help the poor dogs who get dumped at her house. How overwhelming that must be for her! But when trying to help animals, kindness goes so much further in so many ways than judgment does. Peace to you.
DeleteAnnie,
DeleteFirst of all, I never saw a message from you. If you sent one and I missed it, I sincerely apologize. I get hundreds of messages each day, and no matter how hard I try... I can't ever seem to get back to all of them.
Secondly, over the past few months, many rescuers have worked together to help Elly. So even if I did miss your message, many of us have been working to help her... with food, funds, fosters, adoptions, etc. I appreciate the fact that you were one of those people.
Thirdly, when Patrick was dumped at Elly's home, others started a chip-in for Elly, before I even took him. That chip-in raised more than $600 in funds, which I told Elly to keep... in order to help the other dogs that have been dumped on her property with food, vet care, etc. That was money raised for Patrick, but I told Elly that I would raise any funds needed, as long as she used the chip-in funds to help her other dogs. If I was sooo concerned about funds... why would I have done that?
Lastly, you have no idea just know many people begged me to take this dog, including Elly. If you think I was searching for another dog, that's just not true. I only stepped up, based on the desperate requests from many rescuers in MS, and the special needs of Patrick. I'm sorry you felt the need to respond to my post with the words you used, but I do realize that you're probably just concerned, and any rescuer like me can appreciate that.
Thanks,
Ash
Actually the lady that took her the food lived 15 minutes away. She wasn't re routed. I believe LDR is 45 minutes away.
DeleteDear Ms Anonymous, this was very uncalled for, and you know it!
DeleteAnnie-It must be nice to have so little to do, that you have time to drop everything and help for every request you get. Unfortunately, not everyone has that luxury.
DeleteAlso, important note: According to one of last year's Chase winners, contest winnings won't even begin to arrive until at least January. Therefore... a request for funds today... for a dog who needs help today... is totally acceptable by LDR.
DeleteLove,
Ash :)
Ashley, Class act!
DeletePeople make me sick! You have such a beautiful soul for doing what you do. I only hope to help something so much one day :)
ReplyDeleteDoes Mrs Anonymous have a Name? ;-) I wonder.....
ReplyDeleteWhich comment are you talking about?
DeleteSo happy you guys won the chase grant! Keep doing what your doing! Will donate to your cause as I can!
ReplyDeleteIm.so happy this has a happy ending. : )
ReplyDeleteAshley you are a sweet soul. I wish everyone could be even just a little like you. I really hate to see our furbabies in such bad shape. Keep up your wonderful work. Thank you.

I am so glad he has a loving owner! Wonderful! You are an amazing person.
ReplyDeleteASHLEY , what a beautiful person you are ,as a animal lover and owner of two dogs [ GABBY , & MIMI ] i agree with you how can people be so cruel . MY WIFE & I would take in every stray if we could . one, we don't have room but just wanted you to know how much your stories meant . i'm up here in RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA .Keep up the mighty fine work [ i'm sure you will ] i love your spirit and heart and love for animals , GOD BLESS YOU ...
ReplyDeleteYOU ARE AN ANGEL ASHLEY! Dont let anyone bring you down or make you feel like you dont do enough! You do SO much more than all of us commenters combined. I just wanted to thank you for all that you do!!
ReplyDeleteThat last picture is worth a thousand words. He is so lucky to have found you. I can't think of a better person to have won the chase contest either. I was so excited for you. Whenever I see a contest that gives anything to a rescue, I enter yours. I wholeheartedly believe in what you are doing, and think maybe it would be wise to clone yourself now, just in case :).
ReplyDeleteYou all are angels. I will donate just as soon as I can. Thanks for what you're doing for these most innocent of creatures. They don't deserve the horrible treatment they get from humans. Breaks my heart.
ReplyDeleteYes, Patrick Star truly is a lucky dog. Thanks to all of you involved, he will now get the love and care he deserves!
ReplyDeleteGod Bless!!
ReplyDeleteKudos to ashley, miss elly and all the rescuers all over, if there were more people who would do what they can for these babies instead of being negative to the people who do care, then we and the babies would be better off! Just remember all u abusers out there, THESE ARE GOD'S CREATURES! VENGEANCE IS MINE SAYETH THE LORD!
ReplyDeleteI truly wish the same abuse could be done to the people who chose to abuse these selfless pets. If only there was some real retribution on these abusers! This very lucky dog has a chance at a new life! Thank you all involved.
ReplyDeleteAshley, 20$ coming your way, thank you for doing what you do for our breed, you rock!

Wow, this story broke my heart. The cruelty of some "people" just goes too far. The hatred their rotten hearts must be consumed with.
ReplyDeleteBut you, my dear Ashley, are a true hero. ♥
There are no words to express just what a wonderful person you are.
There are to few people like you and Caycee in this world that are true animal lovers. Y'all go to great lengths to take such wonderful care of your rescued dogs. All your precious dogs are very Lucky Dogs to be in your care. I know the Chase grant is a blessing to your rescue efforts and you will use it wisely. To the negative posts, "SHAME ON YOU"!!!!! No one knows what all goes on at your rescue on a daily bases or the number of dogs there that you and Caycee care for. I was fortunate to visit Lucky Dog Resuce a few weeks ago and was truly impressed with the entire facality. It is extremely clean and so well organized. Thanks for all y'all do for your "Lucky Dogs"!!
ReplyDeleteAshley your a angel from God! Bless you for all you do for these dogs! Your my Hero!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ashley for taking Lucky Patrick.............he's in great hands now. Can't wait to see pics when he's feeling better.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ashley for going to his aid, your a blessing. I don't know what the world is coming to.
ReplyDeleteAshley I wanted to know if I could put pics of the dogs from pet pardons on my blog because I always add my blog to search engine sites and on facebook! To help them find homes!
ReplyDeleteI Thank you on behalf of all the animals :)
ReplyDeleteWe need more people in this world like you. Thank you for saving so many animals!!
ReplyDeleteThank you again for rescuing this sweet baby and your continuing hard work. I can't wait to see updated pictures of this baby after a few weeks at LDR! Please keep us updated if you can. Thanks again.
ReplyDeletedonated!! thank you for all you do!!!!
ReplyDeleteWould it be possible to give us a update on how Patrick Star is doing.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!
Thank you for ALL you do!!
Hey! I promise I'm working on it... things have just been crazy busy lately! I also have so many amazing new pictures of him to share as well!
DeleteIn the meantime, I can tell you he's doing incredibly! He's gained so much weight.... he's feeling so much better... and he's developed the cutest little personality!
PS- I did share an updated photo of him on the Lucky Dog Rescue Blog page last week. Please check it out!!! :)
Hey My foster Momma dog has mange.. I have been rotating between fresh aloe plant and olive oil. The olive oil helps to soothe the itch while also killing the mites. The cold aloe helps with the pain and soothes the skin. Also tons of vit. C. and maybe even some scrambled eggs.
ReplyDeleteMy Sabrina girl was emaciated pretty bad but she held on to hope for me while we arranged for her to come up..doing her best to feed her pups. The first night I had her I fed her away from her pups... She didn't eat...she brought mouth fulls of food to her pups and nudged them to eat after they had eaten and gone to sleep she ate the 20 or so pieces of kibble.... (I feed her more after but she is such a sweetie) She has gained at least 20 pounds since I've had her! :)
Is that a breed of Pit-bull? patrick is lucky because he/she survive the pain..thanks to this blog :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know that I can afford to donate every time your blog makes me cry, but I am trying :)
ReplyDeleteYour rescue and blog show that, yes, there is incredible cruelty in the world and sweet dogs like Patrick suffer all the time. But there is such kindness too, which is what Patrick will experience for the rest of his life. That is amazing! Reading this makes me appreciate even more my own rescue pup and the hard work of the many volunteers that brought her to me...you do such important work!
Wow you have done great work. I really happy after read this post. People should save animal. We have to do all to make them comfort in our homely atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteSorry Ashley, I know you are a very busy lady but I just wondered how Patrick is doing. I saw you tell someone you had put a pic of him on your blog in early October. I have searched but can't find it. I only have my phone ( no pc) but saw the poor little soul when he was first found and wondered how he was doing. Do hope he is ok. Thankyou from the UK xxxx

ReplyDeleteHi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteBeen a long time since we have heard from you. I hope everything is ok. I am chronically ill and have been homebound battling a serious disease for the past 2 years. I really enjoy hearing your stories about your babies because we share a similar wit and a common bond of the desire to save these furbabies who can't help themselves. My body may be broken right now but my heart still feels exactly what yours does when you are called into action to serve. I miss being able to scoop them up and make a difference in their lives. Reading your blog gave me that little extra push to keep fighting my Lyme Disease so I can get back out there to bring whatever comfort I can to the animals in need who cross my path. Now I have also lost my 21 years old kitty companion last August so my sickbed seems extra lonely. I am sure you are very busy but I thought you should know that you have a reader out here who gleans great heartfelt enjoyment from your blog while her body cannot do what her heart wishes that it could. Keep up the great work~ your blog is more important than I think you may realize.

I hope I can make enough money to do what you're doing for these dogs. Sadly, I am a broke college student, or I'd donate all that I have. You really do an amazing thing, and you are truly inspiring.
