Meet Missy

My name is Missy, and I’m a 7 month old, Hound mix. I’m a real nice pup, and I try real hard to be a good girl. But no matter how good I am… no matter how hard I try… I’ve still never had a family.

All my little pup life, I’ve wanted someone to love me. But my heart is sad, because no one has ever wanted me. When I was real small, I lived with some people who didn’t treat me very nice. I loved them so much, but they didn’t love me. They never fed me; they never played with me; and they yelled at me a lot. I’m pretty sure they hated me for being there... and it hurt my feelings all the time.

Then, one day, they threw me in the back of their truck. At first, I thought we were going for a fun ride, and I got real excited! I couldn’t wait to see where the neat pup ride would lead us! I thought maybe they were gonna take me somewhere good… to someone would who finally want me and like me. But I was wrong…

They stopped the truck, picked me up by my neck, and threw me out in the country. Then, the truck sped away… without me. I ran real fast to try to catch them… I thought maybe they didn’t mean to leave me behind. I was crying, “Wait for me! Please! You forgot to take me with you!” But after running for a real long time… I couldn’t see the truck anymore. And then I realized… that they meant to leave me. They didn’t want me anymore, and this was their way of making sure I could never find my way back to them. This was their way of leaving me to die...

I looked around, and I was all alone. It was real dark, and I didn’t know where I was. I cried, because I’m real afraid of the dark. That was the most scared I have ever been. I wandered around looking for someone to help me, but there was no one. I was out there all alone for what seemed like forever. I was so hungry... my tummy would growl all the time. It was real cold outside, so I would curl up in the woods and shiver myself to sleep every night.

One day, some new people scooped me up, and put me in their truck. They seemed nice, but I was real scared, because I just knew they were gonna throw me out again. But I must have been real good that day… because they didn’t dump me like those other people did. Instead, they took me to live with my foster mom, Ashley.

That day, my little pup life changed forever. I didn’t know what love was like, but my Ashley-Mom taught me all about it. She’s so nice to me… she gives me hugs, and kisses, and playtime. She has lots of other rescue pups just like me, and they are my favorite friends to play with!

But my very bestest friend in the world was a pup named Tally. Tally and me would run and play for hours, and we told each other lots of secrets. I loved her so much! But last weekend, Tally left me to go to her new family in Florida. I was real happy for her… but I was so sad too. I miss my friend… But what’s more, I still don’t have a family of my own...

I want a family… a family that wants me. When the families come to look for their new pup, I jump up and down and say, “Me! Me! Me! Look at me! I’m special! Please pick me! Please!!!” But they always pick another pup to be special…

This one time, a family came through, and they asked if they could play with me! Boy-oh-boy was I excited! I tried so hard to show them how fun I can be, and I thought for sure they would see it and pick me! But then… they saw the little puppies, and they decided to pick one of them instead… I was real sad that day.

I’m not sure what it takes to get a family, but I hope I’ve got it. I’m real loving and sweet. I love to be by someone’s side, whether it’s outside while they’re doing yard-work or inside on the couch. I'm a real good girl, I promise.
I have lots of fun pup energy! I love to run & play! My Ashley–Mom says I’m one of the funniest, cutest pups around! And let me tell you, she knows pups! She laughs at me when I play with the other dogs, because I get so excited, and sometimes I can be sorta clumsy. This one time, I was running so fast and playing so hard that I ran head-first into the fence! But I didn’t even let it stop me! I just got right back to playing! I’m real smart too, and I can learn lots of tricks if you’ll teach me!

Every day, I play as hard as I can, and I'm as happy as can be! But every night, I dream about having a family of my very own… a family that loves me… a family that wants me. And for now, that dream only lives in my head...
I really hope somebody wants me one day. I don’t ask for much, I promise. I just want to be special. That’s all I want… that’s all I need...

My name is Missy, and I love you already. Please, make me special for the first time in my life. Please... take me home…

My Meridian Star Column: Introducing New Pets

I write a weekly Pet Column for my local newspaper, The Meridian Star. This week's topic: How to introduce your new pet to your existing family pets. I get a lot of questions about this subject, so I hope this info helps!

Furry Friends… Or Enemies
By: Ashley Owen Hill, guest columnist
THE MERIDIAN STAR
Introducing a new dog or cat to your current pets is not always easy. In your head, you picture a fun meet-and-greet, full of laughter and joy. In reality, this introduction often becomes a chaos-filled, fur-flying, blood bath. Well now, that went worse than expected…

So why does this happen? Animals can be very territorial over their homes and families, especially when they’ve never had to share. Your current pet will likely see the new guy as a threat, and may try to dominate by saying, “Step off, buddy. I’ve put in years at this joint.”

Dominance is a natural part of the canine and feline worlds. Animals feel the need to assert a claim over their territory and establish themselves as the ‘top dog’ (or cat). Pets may often attempt to achieve their ranking through physical and mental dominance of another. I think we all know people like this as well…

Dominating behavior is especially true for pets of the same sex. In their natural order, males are inherently more dominant (or higher ranking) than females. But within the same sex, animals try to establish a ranking order by showing the other who’s boss.

When bringing home a new pet, the right approach must be used. If possible, introduce your pets on neutral ground, so the existing pet feels no sense of ownership over the space. For dogs, try taking them on a leashed walk together. It’s important to keep them focused on enjoying the walk, rather than on killing each other. You can allow them to sniff, but correct them if growling begins. If one or both pets have exhibited aggressive behaviors in the past, muzzles may be needed in the early stages to protect everyone involved.

Back at home, temporarily confine existing pets to one area, while allowing the adopted pet to check out their new digs. This is essential in making the new pet feel comfortable with their surroundings and keeping them safe from any attacks as they explore this strange new world.

When introducing dogs and cats, confine the cat to a pet carrier, place your dog on a leash, and allow the dog to approach the kitty’s crate. If your pup becomes overly excited or aggressive, correct him with the leash. Give praise for calm behavior and friendly interest. When they’ve accepted each other, try supervised visits, but ensure that the cat has a safe place to hide if things get hairy.

Don’t force things. Allow your pets to adjust at their own pace. Give praise for friendly behavior, and correct when they get snippy. Until your pets are BFFs, do not leave them together unsupervised. Even after they start feeling the love, it may still be a good idea to keep them separated while you are away.

Inviting a new pet into your home can bring joy… or limb-loss. The outcome depends on how you handle it.  Start things off on the right paw, and everyone’s limbs should remain intact.

Letter From A Shelter Worker

The following letter was written by a shelter worker. I really wanted to share this note, because it presents the cold, hard reality for shelter pets in America. Everyone needs to read this... Breeders need to read this. People who support breeders by buying pets need to read this. Anyone who has ever given up their pet needs to read this. The world needs to know the truth...
Wisdom of a Shelter Worker, MUST READ
Benny was killed in a shelter earlier this year
I think our society needs a huge wake-up call. As a shelter manager, I'm going to share a little insight with all of you...a view from the inside, if you will.
First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the “back” of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don’t even know.
That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when he or she’s not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there’s a 90 percent chance that this dog will never walk out of the shelter at which he/she will be dumped? Purebred or not! About 50 percent of all of the dogs that are owner surrenders” or “strays” that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.
The most common excuses I hear are; “We are moving and we can’t take our dog (or cat).” Really? Where are you moving to that doesn’t allow pets?
Or maybe they say, “The dog got bigger than we thought it would.” How big did you think a German Shepherd would get?
“We don’t have time for her.” Really? I work a 10 to 12-hour day and still have time for my six dogs!
“She’s tearing up our yard.” How about making her a part of your family inside the house?
They always tell me, “We just don’t want to have to stress about finding a place for her. We know she’ll get adopted. She’s a good dog.”
Odds are your pet won’t get adopted… and how stressful do you think it is for these dogs being in a shelter? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop him/her off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn’t full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If he sniffles, he dies.
Denny was killed in a CA shelter
Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. He will have to relieve himself where he eats and sleeps. He will be depressed and he will cry constantly for the family that abandoned him. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don’t, your pet won’t get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of his pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the “bully” breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc.) he was pretty much dead when you walked him through the front door. Those dogs just don’t get adopted. It doesn’t matter how sweet or well behaved they are.
If your dog doesn’t get adopted within his 72 hours and the shelter is full, he will be destroyed. If the shelter isn’t full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed, he may get a stay of execution-- but not for long. Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment.
If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles, chances are he will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed, because shelters just don’t have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.
Here’s a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being “put-down”:
First, your pet will be taken from his kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk… happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to “The Room.” Every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death, or maybe they can feel the sad souls that are left in there. It’s strange, but it happens with every one of them.
Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by one or two vet techs, depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the “pink stuff.”
Hopefully, your pet doesn’t panic from being restrained and jerk. I’ve seen the needles tear out of a leg, and I’ve been covered with the resulting blood and deafened by the yelps and screams. They don’t all just “go to sleep.” Sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air, and defecate on themselves.
When it all ends, your pet’s corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed… waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You’ll never know, and it probably won’t even cross your mind. It was just an animal, and you can always buy another one, right?
I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can’t get the pictures out of your head. I deal with this every single day on the way home from work.
I hate my job. I hate that it exists, and I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much further than the pets you dump at a shelter.
Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters, and only YOU can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can, but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.
My point to all of this: Don’t breed or buy while shelter pets die!
Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope that maybe I changed one person’s mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say, “I saw this letter, and it made me want to adopt.” That would make it worth it.

Please... Adopt Me

Due to Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) in Rankin County, Mississippi, Lucky Dog Rescue recently took in 6 Pit Bull rescues from Animal Rescue Fund of MS (ARF). I'd like to share their special stories with you, in hopes of finding the amazing forever homes they deserve.

Molly, Bonnie, Pinky, Capone, Sissy, and Mimi each tell their stories in their own words. Please... help them go home...

Molly
My name is Molly. I am looking for a family to love me. I had a family one time, but they treated me real bad. I lived in a scary house, and my family sold drugs. I didn’t ask for much… just a little love and some food every now and then… but they didn’t want to give me that stuff. They just wanted to hurt me.

The drug dealers bred me, and I got real sick. I didn’t feel good, but nobody cared. Lucky for me, some nice people saved me, and they got me to the doctor. I felt much better after that... I was a good mama to my puppies, but they all grew up and went to families of their own. Now, I’m all alone…

I really want a family… someone to love me, feed me, and be nice to me. I promise to be real nice back. I love people and children, but I don’t really like other dogs that much. I’d rather have all the love to myself… I’ve never had it before…

I am a 1 year old, Pit Bull mix. I like to run and play, and my foster mom, Ashley, says I’m one of the funnest pups she’s ever met! She says I have a super cute personality, whatever that means. I have lots of love to give… all I need is a family to share it with. If you don’t have other dogs and you’re looking for a special girl to love, please pick me. Please…

Bonnie
My name is Bonnie. I used to have a family, but they didn’t want me anymore. My “dad” told the shelter that he was gonna shoot me if they didn’t take me. That hurt my feelings real bad. I had been a real good girl all my life, but he still didn’t love me…

I tried to be the best girl around to make my dad real proud. I never wanted him to be mad at me, but he was always mad at me. Even when I broke my leg, I tried not to cry, even though it hurt me so bad. My dad knew it was broken, but he wouldn’t take me to the doctor. So my leg healed incorrectly, and now I have a peg leg.
I hope that maybe someone will love me one day. I dream about having a warm bed to sleep in, good food to eat, and a family to treasure. I really want a home so bad… It’s the only thing I want...

I am a 1 year old, Pit Bull mix. I love to play with other dogs, and I especially love people! I do have a bum leg, but it doesn’t hurt me or slow me down! My foster mom, Ashley, says I deserve the best… because that’s what I am, the best. Please, give me a family. Please…

Pinky
My name is Pinky. I got my name cause I had real bad sarcoptic mange as a puppy. When I was rescued, I had no hair and my skin was bright pink from all my scratching. That mange itched me so bad, and my skin hurt me all the time. I cried a lot back then…

Now, I’m all better, but there’s still one thing that makes me sad… I have never had a family. I want one real bad… but I’m 2 years old, and I’ve never had one. I thought maybe I’d get a family when my skin got better, but I was wrong. I see the families coming through to look for their new pup, but they never pick me. I just can’t understand why…

I’m a 2 year old, Pit Bull/Dalmatian mix. My foster mom, Ashley, says this makes me very special! I’m sweet, loving, and outgoing. I love to play, and I really like boy dogs… they are cute and I like to flirt. I don’t like girl dogs so much… boys only please!

If you would like to give me my first family ever, please contact my foster mom. I long for my first home. Hurry please… I’m waiting for you…

Capone
My name is Capone. A few months ago, I was hurting real bad. I had a bad broken leg, a severe case of mange, and I was slowly starving to death. I cried all the time… because no one would help me. I would use all my strength to limp around, trying to find someone to get me to the doctor. But everyone just looked the other way… I learned real fast that the world isn’t always so nice to pups like me….

One day, a nice woman took me to the doctor, and I started feeling better real soon. I felt so special that someone finally stopped for me. I must have been real good that day…

Now, I just need a family to think I’m special enough to love me forever. I am a 1 year old, Lab/Pit Bull mix. I like other dogs, and I love all people. My foster mom, Ashley, says I’m super fun and have the cutest personality. I hope she’s right, because I really want a family. Please… love me. I love you already.

Sissy
My name is Sissy. Two years ago, I was lying in a ditch… waiting to die. I had compound fractures on my back leg… my bones were sticking out through my skin. It hurt me so bad...I never knew something could hurt so much. I just knew I couldn’t go on… So, I laid there in the ditch, and prepared to take my last breath. Just before I gave up hope, I let out one last cry for help… And I couldn’t believe when someone heard it.

The nice people got me to the doctor, but my injuries were so bad that I had to stay at the vet for 4 months. I was so scared, and it hurt so much. But every day, I got a little better, and soon, I was able to leave the vet to go with my rescue group friends.

Now I’m all better, and I just need a family to love me forever. I am a 4 year old, Pit Bull mix, and I am a real sweet girl. My foster mom, Ashley, says I melt her heart with my sweetness. I hope someone else thinks the same and takes me home. I am lots of fun, but I prefer to be the only dog in the home. It’s nice to have all the attention to myself… I’ve never had love before. Please, if you are my family, I’m looking for you. Please…

Mimi

My name is Mimi, and I want a family to love me. I had a family once… I was a treasured family pet and the children’s best friend. When I was a young pup, the children loved me so much, and oh how I loved them. Every day, they would feed me, walk me, and snuggle with me at bedtime. Those times will be forever treasured in my heart…

But the children grew up, and so did I… and suddenly, I wasn’t so special anymore. They kicked me out of the house, and made me live outside. They forgot to feed me; they forgot to walk me; and they forgot all about our special bedtime snuggles. They never even looked at me anymore. When I’d run up to greet them--just as I always had--they’d say, “Ew! No! Go away! You stink!” So, I would bow my head and slowly walk away… Heartbroken.

One day, my family dumped me at a shelter… and they never even looked back. I cried out for them, but they just hurried out the door. I guess they couldn't get away from me fast enough... After years of my unwavering love and devotion, they threw me away. I didn’t know my heart could hurt this bad…

I’m an adult Pit Bull mix, and I am super loving and loyal. If you love me, I love you. I like boy dogs better than girls, and I prefer an older male to a young pup. I like to roll in the grass and enjoy the sunshine, and I love belly rubs. My foster mom, Ashley, says I’m her little angel.

Most of all, I love having a family. I love to matter to someone. If you are looking for a special girl, can I be the one? Please… I need you.

Finally Home

This has been such a bittersweet week for me. Four of my amazing rescue pups went on transport to their forever homes: Pup 1 to Pennsylvania, Pup 2 to New York, Pup 3 to New Hampshire, and Pup 4 to Florida. For months, these 4 dogs have been my children… and now they're gone.

But now, they'll be someone else’s children for as long as they live. Now... they belong. Now... they matter. Now… they are finally home…

Pup 1: Finally home
Sammy was thrown from a speeding car as a baby puppy. He was dumped like trash… and he was utterly terrified. When he came to me, he was trembling uncontrollably, had several injuries, and was very underweight. I was heartbroken to see such a young pup... that had already led such a hard life. He was absolutely broken... knowing that the world could be so cruel…

Over the last couple of months, I’ve watched Sammy evolve from a scared little puppy into a trusting, outgoing, super-fun dog. It’s one of the most special transformations I’ve ever witnessed.

At first, car rides were very scary for him. He'd shiver as we drove to and from the vet. When I'd reach for him... to give a reassuring rub, he'd just cringe, wondering if he'd soon be flung out the window... onto the pavement below.

But he'd soon understand that I would never hurt him. He'd soon realize that he was completely safe now... forever.

I watched... as Sammy learned to trust, as he opened up, as he accepted my love and gave such amazing affection in return. Every day, he'd snuggle in my lap and give me special kisses. That was the best way he knew how to say, “Thank you.”

A couple of weeks ago, the Bollinger family in Pennsylvania contacted me about my little Sam-Bo. They were looking to add to their family, and they’d fallen in love with my Sammy. After approval, we started the process of getting Sammy transported from me in Meridian, Mississippi to the Bollingers in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. On Thursday, I drove Sammy to meet the crew with Rescue Road Trips, and then he was on his way! On Friday evening, Sammy arrived in Allentown, PA, where he was greeted by his new family.

Sammy with his new mom, Jennifer

Sammy has no idea how amazing his life will be from now on. Jennifer Bollinger plans to take Sammy to her chiropractic clinic every day to be her office greeter. He will also go on weekly trips to the lake with his family, and he'll be more loved than he ever could’ve imagined.

Sammy-Baby, I love you, and I’m so happy for you. I'll miss you every day, but you deserve this… life, love, and happiness. You'll forever be special... to your new family, and to me.

Pups 2 and 3: Finally home, for the first time in their lives

In early February, I rescued 8 pit bull puppies that were going to be dumped and euthanized at the pound. Three of those special pups would soon go to amazing homes in Minnesota (love you Jill!).

For the remaining pups, I've been the only family they’ve ever known. I'm their mom. I have watched them grow, held them, loved them, and cared for them, almost all of their lives. I've laughed daily at their clumsy puppy antics… as they'd run full-speed around the yard, so fast that they couldn’t stop before crashing into the fence. I've also been so angry I could scream, when they chewed through just about everything I own… including the cords to my air conditioning unit... WOW. How exactly was that fun for you guys?!

Rescue Road Trips with Darcy & I

These pups have grown and changed right before my very eyes. They’ve given me something to smile about when I felt like giving up. And this week, my little angels, my babies, left me for their forever homes. My happiness for them is overwhelming, as is my sadness that I will never see them again. I won’t be there to watch them grow into adults, or to see them grow old. But because I saved them, someone will be there. These families will be there to cherish them forever.

Darcy, my little angel face, has gone to her home with the Daniels in Tonawanda, NY. Lexi, my special snuggle buddy, has gone to the Gaynor family in Nashua, NH.

Rescue Road Trips, Lexi, & I
And just before I sent them on transport with Rescue Road Trips, I snuggled them close and quoted one of my favorite childhood books, I Love You Forever:

“I love you forever.
I like you for always.
As long as I’m living,
My baby you’ll be.”

Pup 4: Finally home forever
Tally was an owner surrender. When she came to me, she was timid, unsure, and broken… and sadly, I knew why. With owner surrenders, there’s always one common, heartbreaking thread. These dogs are waiting. They're waiting—every day, every hour, every minute—for their families to return for them. They're waiting for the nightmare to be over, for their families to come back and love them again. They're waiting… to go home. And they just can’t understand how they meant so little to the families who meant everything to them.

Tally has been waiting for months. She waits for a family that will never come back for her. I see her… watching, waiting for them to come through the door… hoping every minute that they’ll show up and say, “Tally! We’re so sorry it took us so long! Let’s go home...”

While she's accepted me as her foster mom, I can see the pain in her heart. She's wounded... by the slow realization... that she will never go back to the place she called home all of her life. She will never see her family again. She will never see the people that she lived for… breathed for… would die for. She will never know where they are, or what they’re doing, or if they ever think of her. Sadly, she's already been forgotten.. by the people whom she can never forget.

Every time a car pulls up, I watch Tally run to see if it’s her family coming back for her. She wags her tail uncontrollably as they open the door to get out of the car. And then, I see her bow her head, and return to playing, knowing that her family still hasn’t come for her. Following each heartbreaking episode, I hug her, and rock her, and sob with her.

Alisha (volunteer) & Tally
Yesterday, a car pulled up, and Tally ran to the gate with all the hope in the world that her family had arrived. I watched the look of disappointment on her face… the sadness in her eyes… as yet again, she realized that it wasn’t them. But this time, I smiled. Because what Tally didn’t know... was that this car would lead her to her new forever home in Florida. This time... someone was pulling up just for her. This time… she gets to go home.

Dawnmarie (volunteer) & Tally
Three amazing volunteers offered to transport Tally the distance to meet her forever family. Alisha Kirby took the first leg, Dawnmarie Ingwell took the second, and Janet Foran traveled the final leg to meet Tally's dad, Clinton Smith.

Tally has been waiting for months... but Tally waits no more. Because today, Tally will arrive with the Smith family in Cape Coral, FL… also known as… home.

I love you, Tally-Bo-Bally. The pain is gone. The uncertainty is over. The sadness will not return. Because you are home, baby girl. You are home.
